About Underwood Park
A Glimpse into History
Positioned in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill Historic District, Underwood Park sits quietly along Lafayette Avenue between Waverly and Washington Avenues. This green space once housed the mansion and greenhouse of John Thomas Underwood - a significant figure in the typewriter industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (yes, before laptops ruled our lives).
The Underwood family gifted this land to the city between 1951 and 1953, and on May 30, 1956, it officially opened to the public.
What You'll Find Here
In 1997, the park got a major facelift that managed to modernize while still honoring the historic vibe of the neighborhood. Parents, you'll appreciate that there are two distinct play zones - one for the tiny tots and another for the bigger kids - complete with climbing structures and those cushiony surfaces that make falls a little less dramatic.
Planning an event? Make a reservation at this park
During summer months, the water play section features sprinklers and a large, enclosed play-fountain. It's fun watching kids enjoy the water jets on a hot Brooklyn day.
Scattered throughout are plenty of benches, picnic tables, and chess and checkers tables for when you need a breather or want to challenge a friend. The fully fenced playground areas with limited entry points mean you can relax a bit more knowing little explorers can't easily wander off.
Under the Canopy
The park's large, mature trees create plenty of shade throughout. These trees give Underwood Park a peaceful atmosphere that feels removed from the city bustle.
Own a local business? Promote it right here
Sure, you might notice some uneven tiles where tree roots have pushed up over the years, but that's just a sign of well-established greenery doing its thing.
Get Moving
Swings are always a hit, and here you'll find two sets conveniently placed side by side - smaller swings for the little ones and standard swings for older kids. Recent updates have brought in new swings and slides that make playtime even more enjoyable.
If you're looking to shoot some hoops, the park's basketball courts offer another way to burn energy and have fun.
Where Community Happens
Underwood Park has a community feel with neighborhood families gathering regularly. While mostly frequented by locals, you might also see families from Greenpoint and other Brooklyn areas visiting.

Birthday celebrations and impromptu meetups happen regularly here. Despite its modest size - what some call a "tiny respite in Brooklyn" - the park offers both play areas and quiet spaces.
Good to Know
Restrooms (both men's and women's) are typically available during warmer months from around 10AM to 4PM, however these hours can fluctuate. The park generally stays clean and well-kept, which is one of many reasons it remains a go-to spot for families seeking a reliable outdoor escape.
