About the Location
History and Development
Originally a parking lot, the site was converted into a park in response to community requests for more recreational spaces in the 1960s. After delays due to land studies, Hell's Kitchen Park officially opened on December 4, 1979.
The park underwent a significant renovation in 2005, funded by a $1.2 million allocation from the local city council member.
Community Involvement
The park serves as a vital community gathering space in an area with limited green areas. Local residents and community groups have played an active role in maintaining and improving the park over the years.
In the 1980s, the West 47th Street Block Association and other residents collaborated to enhance safety by organizing gatherings and advocating for improved lighting and fencing.
