About Herald Square in New York
Herald Square Park is a small urban oasis located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Situated at the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue, and 34th Street, this triangular park serves as a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike.
The park is named after the New York Herald, a newspaper that was once headquartered nearby. Its centerpiece is the James Gordon Bennett Memorial, dedicated to the founder of the New York Herald. The monument features a clock and bronze sculptures of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, and two bell-ringers known as Stuff and Guff. These figures, created by sculptor Antonin Jean Carles in 1895, originally adorned the New York Herald building and were moved to the park in 1940.
Herald Square Park provides a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. The area features well-maintained gardens, seating areas with tables and chairs, and shade trees. It's a popular spot for office workers to enjoy lunch, for shoppers to take a break, and for tourists to rest and people-watch.
The park is maintained by the 34th Street Partnership, a business improvement district that has worked to enhance the area since the 1990s. In recent years, the park has undergone renovations to improve its facilities and aesthetics, making it a more inviting public space.
Adjacent to the iconic Macy's flagship store and just a short walk from the Empire State Building, Herald Square Park offers visitors a unique vantage point to observe the energy and diversity of New York City life.
