About Bryant Park
Historical Background
Back in 1847, what we now know as Bryant Park started its life as Reservoir Square. It wasn't until 1884 that it was renamed to honor William Cullen Bryant, a talented editor, poet, and passionate advocate for Central Park's creation. The park's journey through time has included some significant makeovers - a major redesign in the 1930s and then a complete restoration during the 1980s and early 1990s that helped shape it into the urban retreat we enjoy today.
Location and Management
Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Bryant Park spans 9.6 acres of precious urban green space. It's perfectly positioned between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue), from 40th to 42nd Streets - creating a peaceful oasis amid the concrete jungle of New York City.

While the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation owns the land, the day-to-day operations are handled by the Bryant Park Corporation, a private non-profit that keeps things running smoothly.
Park Features
At the park's center lies a lovely lawn surrounded by London plane trees that give the space a distinctly European feel. The eastern side is home to the main branch of the New York Public Library, while the western portion offers various amenities for visitors to enjoy.
The park is notably clean and well-maintained compared to many urban parks. The public restrooms are impressively spotless and well-kept.
Own a local business? Promote it right here
What makes Bryant Park unique is its collection of movable chairs and tables scattered throughout. This clever feature, inspired by public space expert William H. Whyte, lets you create your own little nook for enjoying coffee, diving into a good book, or simply watching the world go by.
Families tend to gravitate toward the charming carousel, while those looking for a bit more activity can try their hand at chess or table tennis. On special occasions, you might even stumble upon organized games like bingo or musical chairs happening in the park.
Events and Activities
During the year, Bryant Park comes alive with free events that bring the community together. When the weather's warm, Monday evenings transform the lawn into an outdoor cinema. You can also find everything from concerts to Wednesday yoga sessions and various fitness classes taking place on the green.

Winter brings its own magic as the park becomes the Bank of America Winter Village, complete with an ice skating rink and holiday shops that create a cozy, festive atmosphere. The Christmas market is particularly worth checking out, drawing both locals and tourists looking for unique gifts and seasonal treats.
For those who need to stay connected, the park offers free Wi-Fi, making it a great spot to work or study outdoors when the weather cooperates.
Food and Refreshments
You won't go hungry here - food vendors and kiosks are scattered within the park offering all sorts of refreshments. If you're in the mood for something more substantial, the surrounding area is packed with cafes and restaurants where you can grab something to enjoy at one of the park's many tables.
Urban Renewal Success Story
Bryant Park represents a successful urban renewal project, where public and private entities collaborated to transform a once-neglected area into a vibrant public square. This renewal has influenced similar projects in other cities.
While relaxing in the park, you can look up at the surrounding skyscrapers - including glimpses of the Empire State Building - offering a peaceful perspective that contrasts with Manhattan's typical busy atmosphere.
