About Walker Park
A Park with History
Located in Staten Island, Walker Park spans 19.5 acres of green space with a backstory that's pretty fascinating. Back in the day, this place was known as Livingston Park until 1934, when it was renamed to honor Lieutenant Randolph Walker Jr. - a local cricket enthusiast who lost his life serving in World War I.
What's really cool about this park is its cricket legacy. The grounds once belonged to the Staten Island Cricket and Tennis Club, and rumor has it that the first national tennis tournament in America was played right here in 1880. Some legendary cricket players stepped onto these fields before the property changed hands in 1925 and transformed into the public park we know today.
What You Can Do Here
If you're into sports, Walker Park offers several options. The cricket fields are still going strong, maintaining that historical connection. They feature matting pitches and regularly host community matches, including some meaningful annual memorial events. There are even changing rooms available if you're planning to play.
The park isn't just about cricket though. You'll find tennis courts near the cricket grounds, plus baseball and soccer fields that get plenty of use from locals. If basketball is more your thing, the basketball courts are ready for a pickup game.
Bringing the kids? The playground and toddler swings make this a family-friendly destination where little ones can burn off some energy. Sometimes it's nice to just sit on the grass too - the park has plenty of open green spaces meant for picnics or just relaxing with a book. And yes, there are restrooms available, which is always good to know when you're planning to spend a few hours outdoors.
Community Connection
What makes Walker Park special is how it honors its history while being an active part of today's community. It remains one of the most popular cricket venues in New York City, hosting regular matches and annual memorial events. The park balances its historical significance with contemporary use, giving it a distinctive character among Staten Island's green spaces.
