About Isham Park

A Touch of History on the Hill

Set in northern Manhattan's Inwood neighborhood, Isham Park covers 20 acres of historic land, perched atop a ridge that offers impressive views of both the Hudson and Harlem River valleys.

This peaceful retreat came into public hands through the generosity of the Isham family between 1911 and 1917. Most of the land once belonged to William Bradley Isham, who made his fortune as a leather merchant and banker before his family decided to share their hillside haven with New Yorkers.

Nature's Canvas

Walk through Isham Park and you'll literally be treading on ancient ground. The exposed Inwood marble outcroppings date back to the Cambrian period, making this an unexpected outdoor classroom for geology students. Near the entrance stands a magnificent ginkgo tree that's been reaching skyward since the 1860s - a living witness to over 160 years of New York history.

The park transforms with the seasons, but perhaps shows off most spectacularly in spring when cherry trees, magnolias, and tulips burst into color. The mature tree canopy creates welcome shade during summer months, meant for escaping the city heat.

There's something deeply meaningful about standing where Native American settlements once thrived and where Revolutionary War soldiers once marched. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of both, and many visitors feel a connection to the Lenape first nations indigenous peoples who originally called this land home.

Echoes of a Grand Estate

Though the Isham mansion and its outbuildings (once envisioned as a local history museum and community center) were unfortunately demolished in the 1940s, you can still glimpse the property's elegant past. Look for the stone entry gate, wander along the circular stone terraces, or rest on one of the inscribed benches that hearken back to the estate's former glory.

Don't miss Bruce's Garden in the northeastern corner - a lovingly maintained public garden featuring thoughtfully designed vignettes and occasional art installations in its charming gazebo.

Community Heart

For Inwood residents, this park isn't just green space - it's a cornerstone of community life. The park represents a natural gateway to the larger Inwood Hill Park next door, while Urban Park Rangers collaborate with local schools on meaningful environmental projects, including slope stabilization and native plant restoration.

The park's calendar features treasured annual traditions that bring neighbors together. The Isham Park Egg Hunt draws families each spring, while the Inwood Pumpkin Pageant transforms the park into a glowing gallery of jack-o-lanterns every November 1st, with hundreds of locals participating in both events.

Your Visit

Isham Park offers something increasingly rare in Manhattan - tranquility. The rolling landscape creates an almost maze-like quality that encourages exploration.

This is a place made for simple pleasures: spreading a blanket for a picnic, losing yourself in a good book, walking your leashed dog, or simply sitting on a bench beneath the shade of century-old trees. While smaller and generally quieter than its neighbor Inwood Hill Park, Isham offers an intimate setting that feels removed from city life.

If you visit on a Saturday (8am-3pm), you'll catch the year-round Isham Farmers Market, where regional farmers sell fresh produce, baked goods, honey products, and other local delights.

Good to Know

The park has several entrances, but be prepared for stairs if approaching from the Broadway side. While there aren't restrooms or playgrounds within Isham Park itself, you'll find baseball fields across Seaman Avenue that are technically part of the park grounds.

If you're making a day of it, Isham Park connects seamlessly to both Inwood Hill Park and The Met Cloisters, making it easy to extend your northern Manhattan adventure.
