About James J. Walker Park
A Glimpse into the Past
Positioned in Greenwich Village, James J. Walker Park spans 1.67 acres of Lower Manhattan's urban landscape. Bordered by Hudson Street, Clarkson Street, St. Luke's Place, and the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center, this green space holds layers of New York history beneath its surface.
Believe it or not, you're walking on what was once St. John's Cemetery, established in 1812 as Trinity Church's burial ground. The city acquired the land in 1895, and after brief stints as St. John's Park and Hudson Park, it was renamed in 1947 to honor James J. Walker, a homegrown Greenwich Village kid who rose to become NYC's mayor.
Transformations Through Time
This park has reinvented itself repeatedly over the decades. The original design by Carrère and Hastings was quite romantic - picture a sunken garden, a serene lagoon, a winding perimeter walk, and a charming gazebo.
By the mid-1930s, practicality had taken hold with additions like a comfort station, expanded playground, and baseball field. The following decade saw a sandlot diamond added and parts of the park paved over for more versatile use.
What You'll Find Today
James J. Walker Park offers a mix of recreational options for locals and visitors. Sports enthusiasts gravitate toward the baseball field with its challenging fence (hitting a ball over it has become something of a neighborhood achievement), the handball courts, and the bocce courts where you might catch some old-timers showing off their skills.
Kids have their own domain with playground equipment and a refreshing spray shower for those sweltering summer days. Across the park, benches invite you to sit and watch the world go by. Near the St. Luke's Place entrance stands a large marble sarcophagus from 1834, dedicated to fallen firemen - a solemn reminder of the ground's former life as a cemetery.

Get Your Game On
The park has evolved into a neighborhood sports hub over time. The turf field welcomes both soccer and softball enthusiasts, with decent lighting extending play into evening hours. Soccer players can comfortably set up 7v7 or 8v8 games on the field.
In a classic New York adaptation story, the handball courts have recently been claimed by the pickleball crowd, adding another layer to the park's recreational identity. You'll even spot people using the open areas for tennis practice, proving that New Yorkers will make the most of any available space.
Where Community Happens
Beyond sports, this park serves many community needs in Greenwich Village. After school, the playground buzzes with energy as neighborhood kids climb, swing, and forge friendships while parents and caregivers catch up on community news.
The shaded areas offer a welcome escape from Manhattan's concrete and glass, with benches perfectly positioned for people-watching or quiet contemplation. The backdrop of St. Luke's Place - with its row of townhouses and fall colors - makes for a pleasant setting.
Keeping Up With the Times
Major renovations in 1972 and again in 1996 brought new play equipment, safer surfacing, and updated amenities to keep the park relevant for changing community needs.
These updates have helped James J. Walker Park remain popular for both active recreation and leisurely breaks in Greenwich Village. That said, the playground equipment and bocce court could use some TLC - but even with a few worn edges, the park remains an important green space in this historic Manhattan neighborhood.
