About Little Island
A Floating Oasis
Next to Manhattan's west side in Hudson River Park sits Little Island, a public park unlike any other in the city. Opened in May 2021, this 2.4-acre artificial island seems to hover above the Hudson, perched atop 132 concrete piles that bloom like tulips from the water's surface.
Designed by Thomas Heatherwick with landscapes by Signe Nielsen, this architectural retreat replaced Pier 54's remnants after Hurricane Sandy's destruction. What emerged is a peaceful retreat that somehow manages to feel both distinctly separate from and connected to the bustling city that surrounds it.
Lush Landscapes
Winding pathways guide you through surprisingly diverse terrain planted with over 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs. The gentle hills and valleys aren't just for show - they create different microclimates throughout the island, supporting vibrant plantings that transform with each passing season.
Climb to the park's highest point, 62 feet above the water, and you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. On clear days, you can spot Manhattan's skyline, the New Jersey shoreline, and if you're lucky, even the Statue of Liberty standing proudly in the distance.
Performance Spaces
Beyond being just a pretty place to wander, Little Island doubles as a cultural venue with several performance areas. The showstopper is "The Amph," a 687-seat amphitheater nestled into the landscape where music, dance, and theatrical performances regularly take place.
For more intimate gatherings, "The Glade" offers a cozier space that holds about 200 people. There's also an open plaza area that hosts informal events and gatherings - proving that this little island packs big cultural significance into its modest footprint.

Visitor Activities
You don't need to catch a scheduled performance to enjoy Little Island. The park offers plenty of ways to pass the time, from interactive musical instruments to oversized games of chess and Connect Four. There are plenty of spots to simply sit and soak it all in, whether on the grass or at the scattered tables and chairs.
When hunger strikes, head to "The Play Ground," the central area where you can find food and drinks to fuel your visit. And if possible, try to time your visit for sunset - the golden hour here transforms the already beautiful space into something truly magical, with the skyline glowing in the background.
Environmental Design
Beneath its obvious beauty, Little Island incorporates thoughtful environmental engineering. The complex irrigation system reuses water efficiently, and each plant was selected specifically to thrive in the unique microclimates created by the island's distinctive topography.
Even the concrete piles serve a dual purpose - they're not just structural supports but have become habitats for marine life, actually enhancing the Hudson River ecosystem. It's a clever example of how architecture and nature can work together rather than against each other.
Visitor Access
You can reach Little Island via two pedestrian bridges at West 13th and 14th Streets. It welcomes visitors year-round from 6AM to 11PM daily, and was designed with accessibility in mind - wheelchair users and those with strollers will find gentle slopes instead of stairs in many areas.
Clean restrooms and water fountains are available throughout, making it comfortable for longer visits. While the island can definitely get crowded, especially during weekends and that gorgeous golden hour before sunset, it somehow maintains its feeling of being a tranquil escape - a floating oasis amidst the urban energy of Manhattan.
