About Stuyvesant Square
A Slice of History in Manhattan
Tucked between East 15th and 17th Streets and split in two by Second Avenue, Stuyvesant Square offers 4 acres of leafy escape from the Manhattan hustle. Back in 1836, Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and his wife Helen Rutherfurd sold this land to New York City for $5 to create a public green space.
It took the city about a decade to get moving, but by 1847, they'd installed the cast-iron fence that still frames the park today. Fun fact: it's actually the oldest cast-iron fence still standing in New York City.

What You'll Find There
When you step into Stuyvesant Square, you'll notice its pleasingly symmetrical layout with fountains anchoring both the east and west sections. Around these fountains, you'll discover flower beds and comfortable sitting areas paved with a mix of granite and bluestone hexagons that give the park its distinctive character.
Look up and you'll see why many locals come here to cool off in summer - the canopy of mature English elms and little-leaf lindens creates a natural umbrella over much of the park. Some of these grand old trees have been standing watch since the park's early days.
The western section offers picnic tables beneath the old trees. Dog owners typically gravitate toward the eastern half, which houses a spacious dog run where four-legged friends can burn off energy while their humans chat.
Art in the Park
Two notable sculptures add cultural weight to this green space. On the western side stands a 1941 statue of Peter Stuyvesant himself (nicknamed "Old Peg Leg"), the last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, created by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Across on the eastern side, you'll come across a more recent addition - a thoughtful tribute to composer Antonin Dvorak by sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, installed in 1997.
These artistic touches complement the historical character that makes this park the centerpiece of the surrounding Stuyvesant Square Historic District.

Community Vibes
What makes Stuyvesant Square special isn't just its trees or history - it's how the community breathes life into it. During summer evenings, you might stumble upon jazz performances on Sundays, transforming the park into an open-air concert venue.
On other days, you might spot couples practicing their tango lessons on the smooth pavement. Bookworms will appreciate the free little library where you can borrow something to read while lounging on a park bench.
Then and Now
The park got a significant makeover in the 1930s under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses (because what didn't in NYC?), and another round of TLC in the 1980s preserved much of its 19th-century charm.
Today, Stuyvesant Square is a peaceful retreat from city life. The gardens change with the seasons, showing off different blooms all year long - the roses sometimes flower well into November, offering a last splash of color before winter sets in.
What you'll notice most is the tranquility. Despite being surrounded by the city, there's a hush here that's great for reading, meditating, or just sitting on one of the many benches and watching the world go by.
