About Vietnam Veterans Plaza
A Place of Remembrance
Set in the bustling heart of New York City, this memorial (dedicated on May 4, 1985) honors the 250,000 men and women from the city who served in the Vietnam War, with special recognition for the 1,741 who never made it home.
Spanning 90,000 square feet, the plaza isn't just a tribute to service and sacrifice - it's also a living history lesson, offering a window into how the Vietnam War shaped New York City and its people.
Powerful Features
The memorial's soul is its 70-foot-long glass wall, etched with real letters, poems, and diary entries written by service members during their time in Vietnam. There's something genuinely moving about reading these personal thoughts while the modern city remains visible through the glass - past and present existing in the same space.
The "Walk of Honor" forms the emotional core of the plaza, with 12 polished granite pylons bearing the names of all 1,741 New Yorkers who died as a result of their service. It's a quiet, solemn space that invites you to pause and reflect on individual stories behind each name.
Thoughtful Design
At the center of the plaza sits a black granite fountain creating a curtain of water. Interestingly, the sound of cascading water resembles helicopter rotors - an unintentional but fitting auditory connection to the war experience.
Near the entrance, you'll discover an etched stainless-steel map detailing battle zones in South Vietnam, providing crucial geographical context for understanding the conflict.
The memorial's location offers beautiful views of the East River, and nearby tour helicopters frequently take off and land - an unplanned but fitting backdrop, given helicopters' significant role in Vietnam.

Experiencing the Space
The plaza creates a remarkably serene atmosphere amid the city's constant motion. Shaded seating areas, lovely flower beds, and a cool river breeze make this an excellent spot for quiet contemplation.
If you're looking for an especially peaceful experience, visit during the early morning hours before the city fully wakes up. It's a rare pocket of calm in a city that rarely slows down.
Renewal
In 2001, the plaza underwent a $7 million renovation that enhanced its design and added new features, creating a more dignified setting for honoring those who served. These improvements have enhanced the memorial's role as a place of reflection and remembrance.
