About the Location
A Historic Natural Sanctuary
Established in 1926, Ellison Park holds the distinction of being the first official Monroe County Park. This 447-acre public park combines natural woodlands with steep slopes and the level flood plain of Irondequoit Creek.
The park's diverse terrain offers visitors a variety of outdoor experiences. Its woodlands provide a serene environment for nature walks, while the creek adds a picturesque element to the landscape.
Extensive Trail Network
Ellison Park is known for its extensive trail system, featuring five blazed trails of varying difficulty levels. These trails wind through the park's natural areas, offering hikers and walkers scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
The park is also a popular spot for launching kayaks or canoes, allowing visitors to paddle downstream on Irondequoit Creek towards Irondequoit Bay.
Rich Historical Heritage
History enthusiasts can explore the park's cultural significance. Near North Landing Road, visitors can find a log blockhouse replica, marking the presumed site of Fort Schuyler, a 1721 colonial fur trading post.
Historical markers throughout the park provide information about Indian Landing, a portage route used by the Haudenosaunee people to avoid the Genesee River's waterfalls.
Year-Round Recreation
The park serves as a year-round recreational destination. In winter, it becomes a prime spot for snow sports, featuring excellent sledding hills and an outdoor ice skating rink.
During warmer months, visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities, including disc golf, tennis, and pickleball.
Dog-Friendly Facilities
Ellison Park caters to dog owners, hosting one of only two legal off-leash dog parks in the Monroe County Park system. This feature makes it a popular destination for pet owners looking for a safe space for their dogs to exercise and socialize.
