About the Location

A Journey Through Time

Genesee Valley Greenway State Park stretches an impressive 90 miles, tracing the historic paths of the Genesee Valley Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad. This linear park winds its way from Rochester to Hinsdale, cutting through five New York counties: Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming, Allegany, and Cattaraugus.

Little Black Creek: A Natural Haven

The Rochester section near Little Black Creek offers a great sample of what makes this park special. Here, you can find yourself wandering through a patchwork of woodlands, wetlands, and open meadows - each area telling its own ecological story as the seasons change.

The trail here won't challenge your hiking boots too much - it's mostly packed cinders, gravel, and mowed grass paths that welcome everyone from casual walkers to dedicated cyclists.

Where Nature Thrives

Little Black Creek itself is more than just a pretty waterway - this Genesee River tributary creates a vibrant ecosystem where the Greenway crosses through. The creek and surrounding wetlands buzz with biodiversity, hosting countless plant species and providing sanctuary for local wildlife during the year.

This section conveniently connects to Little Black Creek Park, giving you even more options to extend your outdoor adventure.

Something for Everyone

Thanks to its railroad and canal heritage, the trail here maintains a gentle, approachable grade that's welcoming to users of all fitness levels.

Depending on when you visit, you might find yourself hiking through autumn colors, cycling under summer canopies, or clip-clopping along on horseback. Nature photographers will find plenty of subjects in any season. When snow blankets the landscape, the trail transforms into a serene route for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing - a completely different way to experience this historic corridor.
