About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away at 100 Kentucky Avenue off Long Pond Road in Gates (a Rochester suburb), Lions Park spreads across 14 peaceful acres. This community location has a variety of amenities, and we've found it to be as locals describe - clean, safe, and a relaxing escape from the daily grind.
The Cozy Shelter
The heart of Lions Park is its enclosed shelter with a covered patio that's heated year-round (perfect for those notorious New York winters!). Inside, you can find a functional kitchen with all the basics - stove, microwave, refrigerator, and freezer.
With room for 95 people and plenty of 8-foot tables, it's an ideal spot for birthday parties, family reunions, or any gathering worth celebrating. Just remember to pack your own cooking tools if you plan to channel your inner chef - the kitchen doesn't provide utensils, pots or pans.
Get Your Game On
There are several sports facilities available. The park features three tennis courts and a basketball court - both with lights for those evening games when you just can't call it quits at sunset.
Fancy some volleyball? The sand court awaits your next spike. For team sports, the park includes a ball field and soccer/football field suitable for weekend leagues or impromptu games.
Beyond Traditional Sports
For those who prefer less intensive activities, Lions Park also offers alternatives. Try your hand at bocce or shuffleboard - games that combine just the right amount of skill, strategy, and social interaction.
If fishing calls to you, check out the accessible fishing pier. While it's a nice feature, just know that some folks mention it could use a bit more maintenance and better fish stocking. For those who simply want to toss a frisbee or spread out a blanket, the large open field provides plenty of green space.
Take a Stroll
The park's walking trails wind through the grounds, offering a peaceful path for your morning walk or afternoon step-count mission. Well-maintained and serene, these trails feature a charming small bridge that adds a touch of whimsy to your nature experience - a little glimpse of tranquility in suburban Rochester.
Kid-Friendly Fun
The children's play area is thoughtfully designed with equipment for various ages. You'll discover slides suited for both toddlers and older kids, baby swings alongside regular ones, and a sandbox for creative play. Parents will appreciate how the playground sits near the shelter - making it easy to keep an eye on the little ones while finishing that conversation or sandwich.
Picnic Paradise
Scattered within the park are picnic tables with rain covers - because a little drizzle shouldn't ruin lunch plans. Garbage cans are conveniently placed nearby, helping maintain the park's tidy appearance. These picnic spots, combined with open fields and recreational options, create a wonderful backdrop for family days out or casual meet-ups with friends.
Practical Matters
You can find restroom facilities throughout the park, including wheelchair-accessible portable toilets. If you're renting the enclosed shelter, you'll have access to larger bathroom facilities inside.
Planning an Event?
While Lions Park welcomes the public daily, you can also reserve areas for private events. Rental fees vary based on whether you're a local resident and what day you're booking - weekdays, weekends, and holidays each have their own rates.
