About the Location
Historic Design
Situated in the northwest corner of Rochester, New York, Maplewood Park is a little touch of history running about two miles along the Genesee River gorge. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted back in the 1890s. Yes, the same mastermind behind Central Park in NYC left his creative mark here too.
Landscape Features
As you wander through Maplewood, you'll find open meadows giving way to wooded areas, all with impressive river and waterfall views in the background. The Maplewood Rose Garden features over 250 varieties of roses, which are highlighted during the annual Rose Festival in June. If you're planning a visit, late June through July is when these beauties are in full, fragrant bloom.
The park's mature maple trees (living up to the name!) provide much-needed shade during those sticky summer days and transform into a canvas of reds, oranges, and yellows come fall. The park offers different experiences as the seasons change.
Recreation and Trails
The Genesee Riverway Trail winds through the park with a smooth, paved path along the gorge's edge. It's suitable for jogging or walking while enjoying the scenery. You can stop at the overlooks to view the Lower Falls and Middle Falls of the Genesee River. For the best waterfall views, head to the pedestrian bridge crossing the river.
The park's gentle slopes and well-kept paths make it ideal for walking, running, or bringing your four-legged friend (on a leash, please). Just note that some areas have steps that might be challenging for those with mobility concerns.
Points of Interest
Keep an eye out for the intriguing Seat of Forgetting and Remembering - a unique art installation featuring four pillars with carved faces surrounding a stool. It's the kind of spot that makes you pause and think. History buffs will appreciate the statue honoring Frederick Douglass, who played a significant role in Rochester's past.
If you're feeling adventurous, the park connects to the broader Genesee Riverway Trail system, opening up miles more of Rochester's riverside to explore.
Amenities
Scattered across the grounds are picnic tables ideal for an impromptu lunch or a planned gathering with friends. If you've got kids in tow, they'll appreciate the playground area to burn off some energy. There are portable restrooms available, but they're basic - just what you'd expect in a park setting.
You'll find plenty of parking areas, so getting here by car is no hassle at all.
Community Connection
Maplewood Park has been an important gathering place for Rochester residents over many generations. The City of Rochester maintains the grounds with support from local community organizations. Various community events are sometimes held here, including job fairs and the city's Tuesday compost program.
