About the Location

A Hill Country Haven

Located in Syracuse, New York lies Highland Park, a 150-acre historic green space with beautiful natural scenery. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (yes, the same visionary behind Central Park) in the late 19th century, this isn't just any neighborhood green space.

What makes Highland truly special is how Olmsted worked with what nature already provided. Those rolling hills and valleys? They're actually ancient glacial deposits. Rather than fighting against the landscape, Olmsted enhanced it, creating what looks like a naturally occurring landscape of trees and plants - though don't be fooled, this meticulously planned arboretum didn't happen by accident!

Blooms That'll Make You Swoon

Plant lovers will find plenty to appreciate here. Highland Park houses an impressive collection of trees and shrubs, but let's be honest - the lilacs are particularly notable. With over 1,200 lilac shrubs spanning numerous species and cultivars, the fragrant display is impressive when in bloom.

Must-See Spots

Make sure to visit the Lamberton Conservatory, built in 1911, where you can escape winter's chill among exotic plants from various climates. It offers a warm retreat filled with exotic plants, especially welcome during Syracuse winters.

Warner Castle is another highlight - a castle-like structure that now represents a picturesque backdrop for wedding photos. Don't miss its sunken garden, a peaceful retreat that feels worlds away from city life.

Seasonal Fun

Highland Park truly comes alive during the annual Lilac Festival in May. This celebration of all things lilac draws thousands of visitors who come to experience the intoxicating scents and vibrant colors that blanket the park.

During warmer months, the Highland Bowl outdoor amphitheater hosts concerts and film screenings under the stars - a wonderful way to spend a summer evening.

Beyond its botanical features, Highland Park offers walking paths that wind through the landscape and picnic areas for a weekend lunch. When winter arrives, the park offers ice skating when conditions permit, making it enjoyable throughout the seasons.
