About the Location
A Walk Through History
Dating back to 1927, Tibbetts Brook Park is one of Westchester County's first developed parks, evolving over the decades. Named after the brook that meanders through its grounds, which itself honors George Tibbetts, a British settler who made this area home back in 1668.
It's pretty amazing to think that parts of this lush paradise were once actually a garbage dump and swampy area locals ominously called "The Jungle." Through years of renovations, the park has preserved its historic character while adding modern amenities.
Natural Escapes
Spread across 161 acres, the park features a blend of woodlands, lakes, and open fields - a refreshing break from the surrounding urban landscape. When you need to escape the concrete and noise, this is where you can breathe.
Walking trails wind through wooded sections, excellent for a morning jog, a contemplative hike, or simply watching for local wildlife. The lakes scattered throughout have become home to a variety of waterfowl - ducks, geese, swans, and if you're lucky, you might spot a crane or two. Grab your fishing rod or rent a paddle boat for a peaceful afternoon on the water.
Don't miss the charming bridges that cross Tibbetts Brook, or the small waterfall that creates one of those perfect, Instagram-worthy moments (though it's even better experienced without the phone).
Make a Splash
The aquatic complex goes beyond a standard community pool, resembling a mini water park. With a large pool for swimmers of all levels, exciting water slides for the thrill-seekers, and a gentle "lazy river" fantastic for relaxing tube rides, there's something for everyone to enjoy on hot summer days.
Kids love the spray playground, while the competitive types gravitate toward the in-pool basketball and volleyball areas. Serious swimmers can take advantage of the lap lanes for a proper workout.
Adding a touch of character to all this watery fun is the preserved Tudor-revival style bathhouse - a nice reminder of the park's long history. If you're heading for the lazy river, you'll appreciate that free tubes and life vests are available, and the 2'8" depth with gentle current makes it accessible for most.
Just note that during summer months, the aquatic complex primarily welcomes Westchester County residents, so bring proof of residency if that's you.
Get Your Game On
When you're ready to dry off, the park offers plenty of other ways to stay active. Challenge friends to a match on the tennis courts or try your hand at the increasingly popular pickleball courts. The basketball courts and soccer fields feature well-maintained surfaces for serious play or casual fun.
For a more leisurely activity, the miniature golf course provides entertainment for all ages. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the outdoor exercise equipment stations, while children can burn off energy at multiple playgrounds designed for different age groups around the park.
Picnic Paradise
There are numerous picnic areas throughout the park, complete with tables and built-in grills. Planning a family reunion or larger gathering? Some areas can be reserved in advance, while others work on a first-come basis.
Many spots offer generous shade from the park's mature trees - a blessing during those peak summer months when the sun is intense.
Community Connection
During the year, especially in summer, the park comes alive with various cultural celebrations, fairs, and festivals. The major activities lawn transforms into a vibrant gathering space that showcases the community's diversity and spirit.
Before You Visit
The park welcomes visitors year-round from 8 a.m. until dusk, offering different experiences with each season. While anyone can enjoy the general park areas, remember that summer pool access is primarily for Westchester County residents.
Expect to pay for parking during summer months when the pool is operating. Clean restrooms are conveniently located within the grounds - always a plus for families with young children or during longer visits.
Dog parents will be happy to know the park is dog-friendly, allowing leashed pets in most areas, however they'll need to stay away from playgrounds, pool areas, and athletic fields.
