About the Location
A Walk Through History
Back in 1905, Charlotte gave birth to what would become its oldest public park - Independence Park. Nestled in the Elizabeth neighborhood, this 24-acre green haven offers a peaceful escape from city life without having to venture far from downtown.
The park has a unique layout, split into two sections by Hawthorne Lane with both areas dipping below street level. This creates a quiet atmosphere that's quite surprising - you're in the heart of Charlotte, but somehow the park offers a more secluded feel. Some locals compare it to a smaller version of Central Park.
What You'll Find
The park offers some nice views of the Charlotte skyline. Several spots in the park frame the city skyline beautifully - don't forget your camera!
The lower section invites you to wander along winding paths under the canopy of mature, leafy trees. Take a moment to stop by the rose garden, pause at the reflecting pond, or rest in the charming gazebo - all perfect spots to read a book or simply enjoy some quiet time.
Head to the upper section and you'll discover more trails alongside plenty of active recreation options. Kids can burn energy at the playground, while sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the basketball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, and a sand volleyball court. There's also a baseball field that doubles as open space for whatever activity strikes your fancy.
The landscaping throughout changes with the seasons, with pretty pink hydrangeas making an appearance during their blooming period. Adding a contemporary touch to this historic space are colorful murals by local artist Georgie Nakima that bring vibrant energy to the park.
Getting Active
Independence Park has amenities for various ages and activity levels. The playground features modern climbing structures that provide both fun and exercise for the younger visitors.
The expansive lawns invite you to spread out a blanket for relaxation, toss a frisbee, strike a yoga pose, or simply soak up some sunshine. If you have a four-legged friend, you'll appreciate the generous space for dog walking.
For those looking to get their steps in, the well-maintained paved paths create pleasant loops around the park. These connect to the Sugar Creek Greenway through a tunnel at CPCC/Mecklenburg stadium, making it easy to extend your outdoor adventure.
Practical Matters
You'll discover clean, well-maintained restroom facilities around the park - a small but important detail for any extended visit. Water fountains are also available when you need to hydrate.
Planning a casual outdoor meal? Several picnic areas with tables are scattered around, and there's a shelter where you can sit regardless of whether the sun is blazing or a light rain is falling. When you need a break, numerous benches offer shady spots under the trees.
Parking is available in small lots surrounding the park, although they can fill up during popular times. If you live nearby, walking over is your best bet for enjoying this local favorite.
Remembering the Past
Take a moment to visit the Lillian Arhelger Memorial from 1931. This bronze and stone monument tells a poignant story - it honors a 21-year-old camp counselor who lost her life trying to save a young Girl Scout from falling over Glen Burney Falls in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
While honoring its history, Independence Park continues to evolve. A major renovation completed in 2023 improved accessibility, added permanent restroom facilities, rebuilt playground structures, and modernized amenities while preserving the park's historic character.
Community Connection
This isn't just a pretty space - it's a community hub that pulses with activity year-round. One highlight is Charlotte's annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas, a vibrant celebration of African American culture and heritage that takes place on June 19th.
The park hosts summer camps and community activities, making it a popular spot for Charlotte residents.
