Found in Charlotte's Midtown, Pearl Street Park stretches across 11 acres of land with a story that runs deeper than its lush greenery. It also served a crucial role for Second Ward High School, providing athletic fields for baseball and football since the school had none of its own. The result? A beautiful blend of past and present, although you might notice it could use a touch-up here and there. The renovation has successfully connected this historic space to Charlotte's ongoing urban development while maintaining its soul and story.

Where History Meets Modern Design

At the heart of the renovated park stands "Brooklyn Stories," a striking bronze and stainless steel sculpture that captures the voices of former residents from Brooklyn - once Charlotte's largest Black neighborhood before it was demolished during urban renewal in the 1960s and 70s.

One of the most thoughtful elements of the redesign is the daylighting of an old stream. Looking for some hoops action? The full-size basketball court sees regular pickup games throughout the week. There's also a well-maintained soccer field that comes alive with youth games on weekends.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the surprisingly comprehensive calisthenics area with various exercise equipment. While there's no traditional playground, kids can have fun on climbing structures integrated with the exercise equipment. And if you're just looking to relax, there are plenty of open grassy areas well-suited for spreading out a blanket in sun or shade.

You'll come across clean restroom facilities near the courts and a shelter area, making it comfortable to spend a few hours exploring. The park offers some of the best views of Charlotte's skyline - great for Instagram-worthy shots or just admiring the city from a different perspective.

Unlike some of Charlotte's more crowded parks, Pearl Street typically offers a more peaceful experience, with plenty of parking available (except during soccer games or special events). The paved paths make for easy walking, and your four-legged friends are welcome too.

If you happen to visit on the fourth Thursday of the month, you might catch one of the evening music events that bring the community together in the open space.
