About the Location

A Cultural Retreat in the Heart of Charlotte

Found in Uptown Charlotte, Romare Bearden Park spans 5.4 acres of thoughtfully designed public space. Opened in 2013, this urban oasis pays tribute to Romare Bearden, the influential African American artist born right here in Charlotte in 1911.

What makes this park special is how it brings Bearden's artistic vision to life. The design - overseen by artist Norie Sato - cleverly echoes Bearden's distinctive collage style throughout its various spaces.

Perfect City Setting

Occupying a full city block in Uptown, the park sits directly across from Truist Field where the Charlotte Knights play ball. Its central location means you're never far from other downtown attractions.

One thing you'll notice immediately is the breathtaking Charlotte skyline view - have your camera ready! And if you're heading to a game at Bank of America Stadium just blocks away, the park makes an ideal pre-game gathering spot.

Art Comes to Life

Wandering through the park, you'll discover distinct areas that tell the story of Bearden's life and work. The Madeline and Maudell gardens aren't just pretty spaces - they're living tributes to gardens that shaped Bearden's artistic development.

The Big Moon Green represents a formal event space that flows naturally into more casual areas. more casual areas. This design allows for everything from structured community events to impromptu frisbee games.

Water and Artistic Elements

The cascading waterfalls and fountain plaza might be the park's most captivating features. On hot Carolina days, the mist from the fountains offers welcome relief from the heat.

Stick around until evening when the fountains transform with colorful illumination, creating an almost magical atmosphere. Kids particularly love splashing around these water features in summer months.

Across the park, you'll spot sculptures and art installations that connect back to Bearden's artistic legacy, making the entire space feel like an outdoor gallery.

Seasonal Transformations

If you visit in spring, you're in for a treat when the cherry blossoms burst into pink clouds of flowers. The gardens shift with each season, offering a different experience whether you come in summer, fall, or winter.

The expansive grassy areas stay well-maintained year-round, providing perfect spots to stretch out with a book or have an impromptu picnic when weather permits.

Community Hub

The park is quite active beyond its aesthetic appeal. Year-round, you'll discover fitness classes, cultural programs, and live music performances bringing the space to life. The free lunch concerts are particularly worth checking out if your timing aligns.

The design balances areas for both energetic activities and quiet relaxation, accommodating different preferences.

What You Need to Know

You'll find clean restrooms available during daylight hours, plenty of benches for resting, and some tables if you bring lunch. While there aren't designated picnic tables, the grassy areas work perfectly for spreading out a blanket.

Dog owners will appreciate that four-legged friends are welcome, with waste stations provided to keep things tidy.

As for parking, street spots are available in the surrounding blocks, however they can fill up quickly during events or busy weekends, so plan accordingly.
