About the Location

A Cultural Landmark

Romare Bearden Park is a 5.4-acre public park located in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. Opened in 2013, the park is named after Romare Bearden, a renowned African American artist born in Charlotte in 1911.

The park's design draws inspiration from Bearden's collages and paintings, as interpreted by supervising artist Norie Sato.

Artistic Design Elements

The park features several distinct areas, each reflecting aspects of Bearden's life and artistic career. These include two gardens named Madeline and Maudell, inspired by gardens that influenced Bearden's artwork.

The park also boasts a formal event space known as the Big Moon Green, which transitions into an open area for informal activities and structured events.
