About the Location

Urban Oasis

First Ward Park is a 4.6-acre urban green space located in the First Ward neighborhood of Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The park, which opened on December 8, 2015, was designed by Shadley Associates after winning a national competition to attract architects.

Situated between East 7th and 9th streets, the park serves as a connector between various city landmarks, including the University of North Carolina Charlotte Center City campus, ImaginOn children's library and theater, and the First Ward Elementary School. Its strategic location makes it easily accessible via public transportation, with a light rail station on-site.

Design Elements

The park's design incorporates native Carolina granite seat walls throughout, which not only provide seating but also embody the region's geology. The central feature of First Ward Park is a large, gently sloping open lawn that functions as an amphitheater for staged performances year-round.

Surrounding this central space are walking paths that wind through native and ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers, offering visitors a natural respite within the urban environment.

Water Features

Two distinct fountains are key elements of the park. One serves as an interactive water feature, while the other, located near the UNC Charlotte City Center Building, is designed for visual enjoyment and relaxation.

These water features, along with the park's other amenities, cater to a variety of visitor experiences, from active play to quiet contemplation.

Development

First Ward Park was developed as part of a joint partnership between Levine Properties, UNC Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the City of Charlotte. It represents one of four major park spaces in Charlotte's downtown area and plays a significant role in the city's urban landscape and community life.
