About the Location
Urban Oasis
Tucked between East 7th and 9th streets in Uptown Charlotte's First Ward neighborhood, you'll come across a 4.6-acre green retreat from the city bustle. First Ward Park, which opened its gates in December 2015, came to life through the creative vision of Shadley Associates, winners of a national design competition that attracted architects from across the country.
The park sits at a perfect crossroads, connecting some of Charlotte's notable landmarks - the University of North Carolina Charlotte Center City campus, the whimsical ImaginOn children's library and theater, and First Ward Elementary School. Getting here couldn't be easier, thanks to the on-site light rail station that drops you right at the park's doorstep.
Design Elements
As you wander through the park, you'll notice Carolina granite seat walls scattered throughout - a thoughtful nod to the region's natural geology that also offers plenty of spots to sit and take in the surroundings. The heart of the park features a gently sloping lawn that doubles as an amphitheater, hosting performances and gatherings year-round.
The central area is embraced by winding paths that meander through a collection of native and ornamental trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers. It offers a natural retreat in the middle of the urban environment. For those looking to break a sweat, you can find fitness equipment stations dotted around the park, letting you squeeze in a workout with a view.
Water Features
Two different fountains add a refreshing touch to the park landscape. Kids particularly love the interactive splash pad that becomes a summer hotspot when temperatures climb. Near the UNC Charlotte City Center Building, a second fountain provides a more serene water feature - great for those moments when you just want to sit and collect your thoughts.
On hot summer days, the splash pad transforms into a mini water playground where children can cool off and play, making it a natural gathering spot for families.
Play Areas
Little adventurers have plenty to explore here. Older kids can test their climbing skills on a modern climbing structure that resembles a spider web, while the younger crowd can enjoy the sturdy red swings that add a pop of color to the landscape.
One of the park's most unique attractions is the musical balance disc - step on, shift your weight, and listen as it creates different musical notes. It's an unexpected bit of interactive art that brings smiles to visitors of all ages, blending play with creativity in the most delightful way.
Events and Activities
The park regularly comes alive with community events, concerts, festivals, and fitness activities. Its open design and central location make it ideal for everything from casual picnics to larger celebrations like the Charlotte Shout festival.
When hunger strikes, the nearby 7th Street Market offers plenty of food and drink options to fuel your park visit. The spacious lawn area provides an ideal setting for a spontaneous game of soccer or frisbee with friends.
Development
This urban green space emerged from a collaborative effort between Levine Properties, UNC Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and the City of Charlotte. As one of four major park spaces in Charlotte's downtown, First Ward Park is one of four major park spaces in Charlotte's downtown, providing a place for people to enjoy nature in the heart of the city.
