C. R. Wood Park
About C. R. Wood Park
Discover C. R. Wood Park
Found in southeast Durham, North Carolina, C. R. Wood Park stretches across 17.4 acres of green space. It's named after C.R. Wood, who wasn't just any parks director - he was Durham's very first Parks and Recreation Department Director and served for many years. A significant contribution to the city's recreational development.
This Commonwealth Street space balances both active recreation spots and quieter areas for relaxation, making it a versatile destination no matter what your outdoor mood calls for.
Play Ball and Shoot Hoops
Got some future MLB stars in the family? The park's youth baseball and softball field is where local kids chase fly balls and learn the meaning of teamwork. Here you can catch a little league game or practice pitching skills.
If basketball is more your style, grab your friends and head to the basketball court. It's usually buzzing with activity, especially among locals looking for a good pickup game. The court is a popular spot for both casual players and those with more serious game.
While some cricket enthusiasts have asked about facilities, there's currently no dedicated cricket ground here - though who knows what future park improvements might bring?
Kid-Friendly Fun
The recently renovated playground serves families with children. Designed for the 2-12 age group, it features both regular swings and special bucket swings for the tiniest visitors. The addition of shade sails overhead helps keep the play area cooler during hot Carolina days.
The park's picnic shelter provides a place to eat, and there's an on-site grill available for cookouts. The picnic tables provide an ideal spot to refuel before the next round of activities.
A Piece of Durham History
The Hayestown Center building within the park carries some interesting local history. Both the center and surrounding neighborhood were named after Elton Clyde Hayes, a pioneering community leader who settled in southeastern Durham way back in the late 1800s. You're literally playing in a piece of Durham's past!
Good to Know Before You Go
Parking can be limited, so you might want to have a backup plan during peak times when spaces fill up quickly.
You should be aware that occasionally unauthorized dirt bikes and four-wheelers make their way into the park, which some regular park-goers have flagged as a safety concern.
As for facilities, there's just one portable toilet that isn't always in pristine condition. On the plus side, you'll find drinking water available in the park - excellent for staying hydrated during those active days outdoors.
