About the Location
A Piece of Durham History
Located in East Central Durham, North Carolina, you'll come across East End Park, a 9.46-acre green space with deep roots in the community. Dating back to 1932, this park came to life through the generosity of local philanthropists John Sprunt Hill and Annie Watts Hill, who donated the land. For generations, it has been a recreational space for the East End neighborhood, which historically was a predominantly Black community.
Get Your Game On
Over the years, East End Park has transformed through various renovations and improvements. Today, it has a nice collection of athletic spots including tennis courts, basketball courts, and a soccer field where local players of all skill levels come to play.
If you're bringing the little ones along, you're in luck. The park features a playground designed for children ages 5-12, and during the warmer months (May through October), the sprayground becomes a favorite spot for kids to cool off and splash around.
Perfect for Gathering
Looking for a spot to enjoy some fresh air with friends or family? East End Park offers several picnic areas complete with tables and grills - ideal for everything from casual lunches to birthday celebrations.
The layout of the park strikes a nice balance with its open green spaces and walking paths, giving you room to breathe amidst Durham's urban landscape. The grounds are generally well-kept and the area is considered safe for families.
What to Expect
You'll typically find a mix of families with young children and people walking their dogs around the park. The clean environment and variety of facilities make it accessible for visitors of all ages.
Note that park facilities, including restrooms, may occasionally be closed for renovation work aimed at improving the overall experience.
Art in the Park
In 2018, East End Park received a colorful upgrade as part of the Neighborhood Park Mural Project. Artist Sarahlaine Calva created a beautiful mural on the renovated bathroom facility, capturing the positive and diverse creative spirit that makes Durham special.
Environmental Awareness
It's important to be aware that East End Park is one of five City parks in Durham that fall under the State's Pre-regulatory Landfill Program.
This designation came after tests revealed high levels of lead and other contaminants in the soil, which has resulted in restricted access to certain areas of the park for safety reasons.
