East End Park

Historical Significance

East End Park is a 9.46-acre public green space located in East Central Durham, North Carolina. Established in 1932 through a land donation by local philanthropists John Sprunt Hill and Annie Watts Hill, the park has served as a recreational area for the East End neighborhood, which was historically a predominantly Black community.

Recreational Facilities

The park has undergone significant renovations and improvements over the years. It now features a variety of athletic facilities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, and a soccer field.

For families with children, East End Park offers a playground suitable for ages 5-12 and a sprayground that operates from May to October, providing a refreshing spot for visitors during warm weather months.

Amenities and Layout

East End Park also includes picnic areas with tables and grills, making it an ideal location for community gatherings and family outings.

The park's layout incorporates open green spaces and walking paths, allowing visitors to enjoy nature within an urban setting.

Public Art

In 2018, the park received a public art installation as part of the Neighborhood Park Mural Project. Artist Sarahlaine Calva created a mural on the renovated bathroom facility, aiming to reflect the positive and diverse creative influences of Durham.

Environmental Considerations

It's important to note that East End Park is one of five City parks in Durham that are part of the State's Pre-regulatory Landfill Program.

This designation is due to the discovery of high levels of lead and other contaminants in the soil, resulting in restricted access to certain portions of the park.
