About Elmira Avenue Park
Park Overview
Positioned in South Durham, North Carolina, you'll find Elmira Avenue Park - an 11.86-acre green space that might require a bit of attention to spot on your first visit. The entrance is along a narrow access road that's easy to miss if you're not keeping an eye out.
Playground Area
The playground got a complete makeover in Fall 2017, and it's specifically designed with 5-12 year olds in mind. The equipment is in great shape with proper safety surfacing underneath, meant for letting the kids burn off some energy. Just a heads up though - the play structure leans toward the older kids in that range with some pretty steep slides, and there aren't any swings to be found.
ADHistoric Oakwood: History & Architecture Tour
Raleigh's historic Oakwood and North Blount neighborhoods are famous for their array of fascinating historic houses, displaying a multitude of historic architectural styles from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Travel through Oakwood with a professional historian guide and experience the evolution of American architecture, from the elegant Second Empire style to the playful Queen Anne style and much more.
Sports Galore
Tennis, anyone? The park has eight well-maintained courts that are suitable for tournaments. You'll often see a mix of casual players, school teams, and tennis lessons happening here. There's even a tennis backboard if you want to practice your serve or groundstrokes solo.
The excellent lighting means your game doesn't have to end when the sun goes down, but be prepared for some pretty bright lights that might catch your eye during serves. Worth noting that after rain, some of the lower courts might have water seeping through cracks, even on otherwise dry days.
Not into tennis? The park also features two basketball courts for those who prefer shooting hoops.
Trails and Picnic Spots
If you're looking to get some steps in, you can access the greenway and trails right from the park. Elmira Avenue also represents a convenient parking spot if you're planning to hit the American Tobacco Trail.
Want to make a day of it? The park's picnic shelter, tables, and grills create a nice spot for lunch or a family gathering. The picnic area isn't huge, but it offers a pleasant setting for outdoor meals surrounded by nature.
Dog-Friendly Features
Four-legged friends are welcome here, and you can find bag dispensers throughout to keep things clean. The only downside is that the walking area for dogs is somewhat limited, so active pups might need more space to roam.
