A Fresh Community Space Reborn

In 2021, Belmont Park got a major facelift as part of Durham's Participatory Budget (PB) Improvement Projects. The transformation came directly from community input, carefully balancing spaces for both active fun and peaceful relaxation.

Bike Enthusiast's Corner

A highlight of Belmont Park is its bicycle pump track - a looped circuit featuring hills, berms, and banked turns. What makes it special? Instead of constant pedaling, you generate momentum through an "arm-pumping" motion, creating a uniquely satisfying riding experience.

It's worth noting that some berms have taken a hit from water runoff and could use some TLC. Even with these minor issues, local cyclists still flock here for quick rides and skill-building sessions.

Next to the main track sits a strider bike track, perfectly sized for the little ones. This thoughtful addition helps young children develop balance and coordination before they're ready to tackle pedaling. This setup allows kids to progress through their cycling journey in one space.

Green Touches

The park's environmental elements deserve some spotlight too. You'll discover improved pedestrian access that boosts street visibility, a winding natural surface walking path, comfortable cedar benches, and carefully selected native plants nestled under the shade of magnificent oak trees.

Need a break? The refurbished cedar top picnic table offers an excellent spot to catch your breath, enjoy a snack, or simply take in the surroundings.

Art in the Park

One can't-miss feature is the Belmont Park Dragon, an eye-catching public sculpture with interactive elements that beg to be explored. This collaborative creation - designed and installed by Red Rabbit Wood Carving and Nature Trails NC, LLC - adds both visual interest and hands-on fun to the park experience.

The renovation of Belmont Park has created a space where active recreation and quiet enjoyment coexist. It offers Durham residents an outdoor retreat with various amenities.
