Piney Wood Park
About Piney Wood Park
Recreational Facilities
Stretching across 39 acres, this expansive green haven offers a little bit of everything for outdoor enthusiasts. The crown jewel here is undoubtedly Durham's first 12-court dedicated pickleball facility, which opened in 2020 and has quickly become a hotspot for players of all skill levels. These courts are thoughtfully maintained, tucked among leafy trees, and come with lighting for those evening games when you just can't call it quits.
If pickleball isn't your thing, no worries. There's a well-kept baseball/softball field for adults, a spacious soccer field (417 feet by 213 feet, for those keeping score), and a multi-sport court. Basically, if you're into sports, you'll find plenty of options at Piney Wood.
Family and Pet-Friendly Areas
Got kids? The playground here caters to ages 2-12, however it's honestly a bit more exciting for the 5+ crowd. It's decked out with all the classics - swings, slides, and enough monkey bars to make your arms sore just looking at them - all under a natural canopy of shade trees. What really sets this playground apart is the adjacent wooded area where more adventurous kiddos can channel their inner wilderness explorer, building log bridges and tree forts.
Dog parents, rejoice! Piney Wood Park hosts Durham's first dog park, a favorite among local four-legged residents. It's thoughtfully divided into separate enclosed areas: one for small pups (15 inches or smaller and under 30 pounds) and another for the bigger dogs. Just remember you'll need to register before your pooch can join the fun.
Relaxation and Amenities
Not everyone comes to the park for high-energy activities. If you're looking to take it slow, head to the picnic facilities with the large covered pavilion, tables, and grills. These spots are great for everything from family reunions to casual weekend cookouts with friends.
The park's natural beauty, with its generous tree cover and open spaces, creates an ideal backdrop for a morning jog, an afternoon stroll, or simply sitting with a good book. Those shaded areas are particularly welcome treasures during North Carolina's sweltering summer months.
Facilities and Accessibility
You'll discover multiple restroom facilities within the park, but be aware they might have limited availability during winter. Water fountains are conveniently placed around the grounds for when you need to hydrate.
While Piney Wood offers plenty of parking, spaces can become scarce during events or busy weekends. A quick word of caution: it's best to keep valuables out of sight in your vehicle, as break-ins have occasionally been reported in the area.
