Twin Lakes Park
About Twin Lakes Park
A Lakeside Escape
Found in East Central Durham, Twin Lakes Park spans nearly 50 acres of recreational space centered around two peaceful lakes. If you're lucky during your visit, you might catch glimpses of local wildlife - deer wandering near the tree line or geese gliding across the water's surface.
A modest walking trail hugs the shoreline, ideal for those moments when you need to clear your head while taking in the natural beauty. There's something calming about strolling alongside water, especially when you can pause to watch turtles sunning themselves or birds diving for fish.
Get Moving
The crown jewel for sports enthusiasts has to be the championship-sized turf soccer field that stays open year-round. With its artificial turf and lighting setup, you can get your game on regardless of weather or time of day. Around the field runs a paved walking track - ideal for getting those steps in while maybe watching a match in progress.
You'll also find two basketball courts available for shooting hoops, however they could use a bit of TLC according to regulars.
If fishing is more your speed, grab your rod and head to the banks of either lake. Just remember to bring your North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission fishing license! The lakes are home to a decent variety of fish - crappie, bass, catfish, and bream all swim these waters. Some local anglers have been pulling impressive catches from these lakes for years.
Family-Friendly Spots
Kids between ages 2-12 will gravitate toward the playground facilities with their array of slides, swings, monkey bars, bridges, and ladders. Parents will appreciate the shaded areas that help keep little ones protected from the intense summer sun.
Planning a gathering? The park offers two picnic shelters - one large and one small - that you can reserve for birthday celebrations, family reunions, or just a weekend cookout with friends. These covered areas provide welcome relief from both sun and surprise rain showers.
Good to Know
Twin Lakes Park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM until 9PM. You'll come across it at 439 Chandler Road in Durham, easily accessible from most parts of the city. Restroom facilities are available near the picnic shelters, but they're basic at best.
If you're bringing toddlers or children who tend to wander, keep a close eye on them near the playground - it borders wooded areas with some steep drops that curious little explorers might find too tempting.
