About the Location

Historical Background

Crest Street Park is a 6.83-acre public park located in west central Durham, North Carolina. The park has a rich history, originally known as "Hickstown" after its owner Hawkins Hicks.

In 1922, a three-teacher school called Hickstown School was built on the property, which grew in size and funding over the next five years, contributing to Durham County's significant growth during that period.

Park Development

The original school was demolished in 1956 and replaced with a modern brick structure in the late 1950s. This building was used for only a decade before being repurposed.

Today, part of it has been converted into senior housing, while another section houses the W.I. Patterson Recreation Center, which serves as a summer camp location for Durham Parks and Recreation.

Recreational Facilities

Crest Street Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. The park features a baseball/softball field suitable for adult play, providing opportunities for local sports enthusiasts.

Additionally, there is a basketball court where residents can enjoy pickup games or practice their skills. For younger visitors, the park includes a playground designed for children aged 2-12, complete with standard swings.

Amenities

The park also provides amenities for more passive recreation and community gatherings. A picnic shelter is available, which can be rented for events, offering a space for family outings, birthday parties, and community gatherings.

The park is equipped with restroom facilities and water fountains for visitor convenience.

Crest Street Park is open Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM, and is closed on weekends. The park's location in west central Durham makes it easily accessible to the surrounding community, providing a valuable green space and recreational resource for local residents.
