About Powell Drive Park
History and Overview
Situated in southwest Raleigh, North Carolina, Powell Drive Park has been a green haven since 1972. This 8.6-acre space might not be the biggest park around, but it packs a lot into its modest footprint.
Over the years, it's evolved into something of a neighborhood haven - a place where locals gather for everything from family reunions to impromptu frisbee games. There's something refreshingly unpretentious about this park that keeps people coming back.
Playground Area
If you've got kids in tow, the playground area is likely your first stop. Designed for children between 2-12 years old, it features a rubberized safety surface - a detail parents will appreciate when inevitable tumbles happen.
The playground is thoughtfully split into two separate sections - one for the little ones and another for older kids. You'll discover climbing structures with slides and a variety of swings, including special tot swings for younger children. It accommodates children of different ages.
ADChapel Hill Ghost Walk
Creepy spirits who inhabit an old auditorium, a haunted forest, an old mansion filled with the souls of those who once resided there, a haunted hotel room, and more. Join us on the Chapel Hill Ghost Walk, and maybe experience a taste of the supernatural for yourself.
Natural Features
The small pond is a notable feature, surrounded by shade trees that create dappled light on the water's surface. Take a moment to sit on one of the benches along its edge or cross the small steel bridges that add a touch of charm to the landscape.
A simple trail covered in pine needles circles the pond, offering a peaceful walk through nature. If you're patient (and properly licensed), the pond is good for fishing - local anglers have had luck catching fish here.
Sports Facilities
Active types have plenty of options at Powell Drive Park. Two lighted tennis courts and a lighted basketball court mean you can extend your game well past sunset.
The large open field (225' x 150') serves as a flexible space with a backstop and soccer goals. The space works well for casual soccer matches, playing catch, or just spreading out a blanket.
Amenities and Facilities
Several small pavilions dotted around the park offer shaded spots for gathering. One pavilion even features a charcoal grill - well-suited for those weekend cookouts. The shade these areas provide is particularly welcome during North Carolina's warmer months.
A paved path connects the various sections of the park, making navigation straightforward. You'll also find plenty of benches throughout, providing places to rest or simply sit and watch the world go by.

Triangle Adventures is excited to announce in 2026 we have launched something new on our tours: AI-powered digital video! This will allow stories to be told from the perspective of the actual historical figure, creating a wildly immersive experience like nothing else out there.
Community Center
The park includes an unstaffed neighborhood center that, while not open daily, can be rented for events or used during scheduled programs. Its glass doors open directly to the playground - a practical feature if you're hosting a child-focused event.
The space is surprisingly versatile, hosting everything from baby showers to book launches, graduation celebrations to family reunions. It's a blank canvas that the community can shape to its needs.
Facilities and Accessibility
You'll come across clean restrooms with nearby water fountains, though occasionally there might be maintenance issues. There's plenty of parking available, so you won't need to circle looking for a spot.
Powell Drive Park uses its limited space efficiently. Despite being compact, it doesn't feel cramped - there's a good separation of activities while still maintaining a cohesive feel.
