About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Positioned on 7.2 acres of Raleigh greenspace, Roberts Park has been a community staple since 1956. The park sits within the Battery Heights Historic District, an area with Civil War roots where earthen batteries once stood guard over the landscape.
This patch of land carries stories from long ago, once belonging to Bartholomew Gatling who wore multiple hats as county attorney and postal carrier from 1915 to 1922. The Gatling family left quite a mark here - their sprawling family home once buzzed with neighborhood energy, hosting everything from dances and crafts to impromptu baseball games. These community connections stretch back through time as you wander the grounds today.
What You'll Find Here
Roberts Park features a blend of indoor and outdoor spaces that make it more than a typical neighborhood park. Sitting conveniently on E Martin Street, it's easily reachable for both locals and those coming from other parts of Raleigh.
One of the first things you'll notice are the large oak trees dotting the landscape, creating natural shade across the grounds - particularly welcome during hot North Carolina summers.
Get Your Game On
Feeling active? The park's tennis courts are well-kept and ready for your best serves. Pickleball enthusiasts haven't been forgotten either - the pickleball courts nestled under the oaks provide a shaded playing experience.
If basketball is more your speed, the outdoor court welcomes players of all skill levels. Baseball lovers can take to the field for casual games or join the local teams that regularly practice and compete here.
Community Hub
At the heart of Roberts Park stands its community center, a gathering place that brings indoor comforts to this outdoor haven. The staff coordinates various events throughout the year.
If you're curious about what's happening, check out the event calendar at the center - there's usually something interesting in the works that brings neighbors together.
Family Paradise
Got kids? The playground is popular with children of all ages. The play areas accommodate children of different ages, so siblings can enjoy themselves simultaneously.
When hunger strikes, you'll appreciate the numerous picnic areas scattered throughout the park. These spaces are notably clean and roomy, with plenty of tables to go around. The grilling stations take outdoor dining up a notch - ideal for weekend cookouts or celebrating special occasions with loved ones.
Practical Matters
No need to cut your park day short - the clean restroom facilities are regularly maintained, and several shelters provide refuge from sudden rain showers or intense afternoon sun.
Roberts Park blends history, recreation, and community into a space with options for various interests and activities.
