About Meadowbrook Park
A Step Back in Time
Nestled near Garner in Wake County, North Carolina, Meadowbrook Park spans a generous 120 acres about 3.5 miles from Garner's town center. This isn't just any green space - it was once the Meadowbrook Country Club, established in 1959 as a private sanctuary where African Americans could enjoy membership during an era of widespread segregation.
The park earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, honoring its role as one of North Carolina's pioneering Golf Club Associations that welcomed African American members. It's a quiet reminder of how far we've come, preserved in rolling hills and open spaces.
From Fairways to Public Space
In 2016, Garner's town officials saw potential in the former country club and purchased the property with vision in mind: creating a public park that everyone could enjoy while honoring its meaningful past. The transformation has been thoughtful and deliberate, aiming to add recreation options in an area that had few such spaces before.
By 2020, the town had drafted conceptual plans for the park's future, seeking input from the community about what would serve them best. The goal? To expand Garner's park system with a space that both serves and reflects its community.
