Lions Park and Community Center

Park Overview

Established in 1961, Lions Park and Community Center has grown into one of Raleigh's largest metro parks, covering 41.4 acres of green space. Its location close to Saint Augustine's University and downtown Raleigh makes it a convenient spot for recreation and relaxation under a generous canopy of shade trees.

Playgrounds

Kids have their choice of two rubber-surfaced playgrounds here. The 5-12 age group playground features a multi-level design with slides, climbing structures, monkey bars, tethered rope swings, and spinning bucket chairs (you know, the ones that make you slightly dizzy but are somehow still fun).

The littler ones aren't forgotten either. The 2-5 age group playground comes equipped with a climbing wall, slides, twisty toys, a seesaw, tot swings, and even bongos for tiny musicians. A huge plus? Lions Park has a good variety of athletic facilities. You'll discover four baseball/softball fields that are kept in top-notch condition, two full-size basketball courts (both inside and out for year-round play), and eight tennis courts that, while lacking scorekeepers, are well-maintained and ready for your best serves.

Perhaps the most unique feature is the Capital City BMX track with its perfectly crafted jumps. This isn't your everyday park amenity - it operates by appointment with a fee, and hosts weekend BMX events that draw riders from all around. If you're into BMX, this is definitely a spot to check out.

Community Center

At the heart of the park sits the community center, recently renovated and spotlessly maintained. The facilities include clean restrooms with showers for everyone, including family options, and a small but functional exercise gym that you can access for a reasonable fee.

The staff here are notably friendly, and you'll appreciate thoughtful touches like water bottle filling stations. The center offers various classes with a special focus on programs for young children, and its extended weekday hours make it accessible for most schedules.

Gathering Spaces
