About the Location

Garden Overview

Tucked away in the heart of Raleigh sits a fragrant paradise that's been delighting visitors since 1951. The Raleigh Rose Garden features over 60 rose beds with roughly 1,200 roses spanning 60 different varieties, all spread across a peaceful 6.5-acre plot on the Raleigh Little Theatre campus.

If you're planning a visit, aim for anytime between late May and the first autumn frost (usually mid-November). If you can, consider visiting in the early morning when the garden is at its most peaceful and the air is filled with the scent of roses.

Rose Collections

Wandering through the garden, you'll discover roses in a stunning array of colors, sizes, and fragrances. Most beds feature labels identifying each variety, however some may have gone missing over time.

The roses are most vibrant from late spring through early fall, with May typically bringing the fullest blooms. But don't worry if you visit outside peak season - there's always something beautiful to discover here, no matter when you come.

Plant Diversity

While roses might be the stars of this show, they're not performing solo. The garden is home to a supporting cast of seasonal flowers, bulbs, annuals, trees, and shrubs. Keep an eye out for colorful peonies, butterfly weed, and other flowers that add variety to the garden's collection.

An arboretum of evergreen and deciduous trees creates a living backdrop that changes with the seasons. Along the garden's edges, woodland plantings like daffodils, Lenten roses, and camellias ensure there's natural beauty to enjoy even when the roses are taking their winter rest.

Architectural Features

The garden's design blends nature with human-made elements that enhance its charm. A fountain functions as the garden's heart, while a stone-and-wood arbor provides both visual interest and a fantastic spot for quiet reflection or photos.

A winding wooden and stone pergola path creates a romantic journey through portions of the garden - it's no wonder this spot is a favorite for wedding photographers. Need a moment to rest? The stone shelter built in 1952 offers a fantastic place to sit and soak in the surroundings.

Stephenson Amphitheatre

Right next to the rose beds, you'll come across the Stephenson Amphitheatre, an outdoor venue dating back to 1939 that can accommodate up to 2,000 people. This space hosts concerts, theatrical productions, and various events, blending cultural experiences with natural beauty.

Take some time to stroll around the amphitheater area - its distinctive architecture adds yet another layer to the garden experience.

Visitor Amenities

The garden is designed for lingering, with benches scattered throughout for moments of quiet contemplation. Bringing a picnic? You can find picnic tables nestled in shady spots and open grassy spaces meant for spreading out a blanket.

Four-legged friends are welcome too - the garden is dog-friendly as long as your pup stays leashed. You can find bag stations and trash cans available for clean-up. As for parking, there's street parking and a small lot, but spaces can fill up quickly during popular times.

Maintenance and Access

This urban oasis flourishes thanks to a partnership between the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department and a passionate volunteer group aptly named the "Dead-Headers."

These dedicated volunteers help with everything from clipping roses and weeding beds to assisting with annual plantings and general maintenance. Their loving care keeps this garden looking its best year-round.

One of the garden's best features? It's completely free to visit, making it an accessible escape for everyone. Its location near residential areas with wide streets makes it easy to reach, turning it into a natural gathering place for the community.
