About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away in Akron, Ohio sits the F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm, a 104-acre natural sanctuary that's part of the larger Summit Metro Parks system. Named after Frank A. Seiberling (yes, the co-founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company), this peaceful retreat exists thanks in part to Seiberling himself, who donated over 500 acres to help establish the nearby Sand Run Metro Park while representing an early Metro Parks commissioner.
What makes this spot special is how it beautifully balances educational experiences with pure outdoor enjoyment. It's designed to be accessible for everyone - regardless of age or physical ability - with the specific mission of helping people connect with and learn about nature. Just one thing to note: unlike many parks, pets aren't allowed here, keeping the focus entirely on the natural environment.
Hiking Trails
If you're in the mood for a walk, the Nature Realm offers several options. The Cherry Lane Trail gives you an easy 0.6-mile loop featuring a pretty awesome suspension bridge that stretches 110 feet across a 45-foot-deep ravine. Looking for something a bit more challenging? Try the Fernwood Trail, a moderate 0.9-mile loop that branches off from Cherry Lane.
And for those wanting more of a workout, the Seneca Trail offers a 1.4-mile mostly unpaved route with some hilly sections that will definitely get your heart pumping. The trails feature a mix of surfaces - paved paths near the main areas accommodate strollers and wheelchairs, while the unpaved sections let you get that authentic woodland feel beneath your feet.
Everything is well-maintained and clearly marked, so you won't have to worry about getting lost. And if you're feeling ambitious, the trails connect to Sand Run Metro Park, allowing for an extended hiking adventure.
Visitor Center
The park features a 10,000-square-foot Nature Realm Visitors Center. Inside, you'll find rotating seasonal exhibits, kids' play areas, and displays featuring live native animals - turtles, snakes, and frogs included. There's also a gift shop called Maple Leaf Gifts if you're in the mood for a souvenir.
One of the center's highlights is its bird watching area, where floor-to-ceiling windows bring you face-to-face with local birdlife. Bring some sunflower seeds and you might even experience the small thrill of having birds feed right from your hand.
Friendly naturalists are usually around to answer any questions about the local plants and wildlife, and the center hosts various educational programs during the year. Just remember that the visitor center has more limited hours than the park grounds.
Gardens and Natural Features
Step outside the visitor center and you'll discover a natural wonderland. The Rock & Herb Garden displays a variety of labeled plants, while observation decks offer views of two ponds, wetlands, and a tall-grass prairie. Plant enthusiasts will appreciate the park's arboretum, home to over 300 species of shrubs and trees, many with identification labels that turn a simple walk into an educational experience.
The wildlife here is abundant and often surprisingly comfortable around humans. On any given day, you might spot birds, turtles, beavers, and smaller critters like chipmunks, rabbits, and squirrels going about their daily business.
When hunger strikes, you can take advantage of the picnic areas scattered across the park - some bathed in sunlight, others offering cool shade - meant for enjoying a meal surrounded by nature's beauty.
Photography and Special Events
It's no wonder the Nature Realm has become a favorite spot for photographers. The combination of manicured gardens, natural landscapes, and wildlife creates perfect backdrops for senior photos, engagement pictures, and other special occasion photography. The scenery transforms with the seasons, giving each visit different photo opportunities.
Park Guidelines
The F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of nature in its purest form. To maintain this environment, some special rules apply: dogs and other pets aren't allowed anywhere in the park, bicycles are restricted to the parking lot, and you'll need to stick to designated trails and walkways.
These guidelines help protect the natural environment for everyone to enjoy.
