About the Location
A Park with History
Positioned in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood of Akron, Reservoir Park has quite the backstory. What was once dismissed as a "wasteland" surrounding the Akron City Reservoir built in 1913 transformed into a public gathering space in the 1930s. The reservoir itself wasn't just for show - it replaced the overburdened wells that couldn't keep up with the city's needs.
Community Hub
The heart of the park is its community center, which started life as a humble playground building back in 1933. Fast forward to 1990, and the center got a significant upgrade with an 1,800 square foot addition that brought in a kitchen and community room - spaces that have hosted countless neighborhood gatherings since.
Splash and Play
When summer heat hits Akron, the park's swimming pool becomes the place to be. Originally built in 1968 along with its bathhouse, the pool offers refreshing relief with dedicated family swim times that bring the community together. For decades, this park has been where memories are made through youth sports programs, summer recreation activities, and various community events - including those laid-back Friday night concerts that give the neighborhood its soundtrack.
Sports for All
Athletes and weekend warriors alike make use of the park's baseball fields, where local softball teams perfect their game, and a football field that sees plenty of action. While these facilities might show their age in places, they provide essential space for community sports and practice sessions.
Room to Roam
Kids have their domain at the playground area, while open spaces across the park give everyone room to breathe. The thoughtful layout creates perfect zones for specific activities while leaving plenty of green space where families can spread out blankets and do their own thing.
Water Works
True to its name, the park's reservoir isn't just decorative - it holds a substantial 20 million gallons of drinking water and continues to play an active role in Akron's water supply system.
Take a Stroll
The walking trails winding through the park have become a daily ritual for many locals. Whether you're looking for a peaceful morning walk or need to get your steps in, these paths offer a green escape without leaving the neighborhood.
Looking to the Future
2024 marks an exciting chapter for Reservoir Park with a major renovation project in progress. The pool is getting a complete overhaul, while the community center is undergoing partial demolition, expansion, and renovation. When completed, you'll come across a modern pool with updated amenities and a community center better equipped to serve everyone who walks through its doors.
Reservoir Park is a valued green space for Goodyear Heights residents and beyond. Its recreational facilities and community spaces provide a peaceful, family-friendly environment where people gather - as they have for generations.
