About the Location

Park Overview

Nestled along the Ohio River's banks in downtown Cincinnati, Smale Riverfront Park spans an impressive 32 acres, creating a much-needed connection between the city center and the waterfront. Since opening in 2012, this riverfront space has become a popular spot for locals and tourists alike looking to unwind, play, or simply soak in those river views. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM.

Landscape and Features

Wandering through Smale, you'll find yourself surrounded by thoughtfully designed landscapes - from manicured gardens and vibrant flower beds to open lawns and smooth pathways. The fountains and water features stand out, especially the interactive splash areas where kids (and let's be honest, some adults too) cool off during Cincinnati's warmer months.

The park doesn't just celebrate nature - it honors history too. The Black Brigade Monument stands as a powerful tribute to the African American soldiers who defended Cincinnati during the Civil War. And you can't miss the views of the iconic Roebling Suspension Bridge, which transforms into something truly magical when illuminated after sunset.

Recreation Areas

If you're visiting with kids, there are several play areas to explore. The Adventure Playground offers a unique play experience, while the Heekin/PNC Grow Up Great Adventure Playground provides even more opportunities for little ones to burn off energy. Within the park, you'll discover multiple playgrounds with nature-inspired elements and interactive equipment suitable for children of all ages.

Adults haven't been forgotten - those porch-style swings facing the river are great for unwinding while taking in the Ohio River panorama. There's also an outdoor exercise area equipped with fitness stations for those who want to squeeze in a workout with a view.

One clever feature we particularly appreciate is the movable picnic tables set on old railroad tracks. These allow you to create your ideal dining setup, whether you're having a romantic picnic for two or a larger family gathering. And of course, there's plenty of grassy space to throw down a blanket if that's more your style.

Interactive Elements

Smale isn't your typical passive park experience. The giant ground piano invites you to create music simply by walking on its keys - no musical talent required! The kaleidoscope offers a fun visual experience that brings out the kid in everyone. These interactive installations, combined with the water play areas, offer opportunities for both play and learning.

Take a stroll along the boardwalk for some peaceful river views, or let the kids explore the various water features where they can learn about wells and dams through hands-on play.

Events and Connections

All year long, the park transforms into an event venue hosting concerts, festivals, and holiday celebrations including spectacular fireworks displays. Its downtown location makes it an ideal gateway to other Cincinnati highlights - you're just steps away from the Great American Ball Park, Paul Brown Stadium, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

The park also is an excellent starting point for exploring more of Cincinnati's waterfront via the Ohio River Trail, which connects to other riverside attractions.

Environmental Design

Beyond just being pretty, Smale was designed with sustainability in mind. Rain gardens help manage stormwater runoff while native plant species support local ecosystems. Within the park, you'll come across educational elements that share insights about the river's ecology and the region's rich history.

Don't miss the rose garden with its variety of beautiful blooms - it's a tranquil spot that offers a moment of calm amidst the park's more lively areas, and an excellent place to literally stop and smell the roses.
