About the Location
A Green Retreat
Nestled within Eden Park in Cincinnati, Tom Jones Commons is a 3.5-acre sanctuary that opened in July 2021. You can find it just south of Mirror Lake along Martin Drive, where the old reservoir once stood. This tranquil space emerged from a 2007 Cincinnati Parks master plan to reimagine the former lower reservoir area.
One of the park's highlights is its wetland area complete with a charming boardwalk where you can pause to observe local wildlife and native plants. A paved walking loop winds through the commons, connecting all the amenities. The flat paths with no inclines make this an accessible spot for everyone.
A Glimpse Into the Past
When you visit Tom Jones Commons, you're actually walking on historic ground. This site once housed a Cincinnati reservoir dating back to the 1800s-1900s. While part of the original reservoir wall was removed during development, other sections still stand as silent storytellers of the area's past.
Stop by the welcome kiosk to learn more about Eden Park's history and the former reservoir's role in Cincinnati's development. The site offers a look into the city's historical water infrastructure - an interesting aspect of this park.
Family-Friendly Fun
Kids will love the natural play area designed for children ages 4-12. Instead of typical playground equipment, you'll discover tall logs, short stumps, and rock boulders creating a natural obstacle course that sparks imagination. The swing set area includes accessible options, ensuring all children can join in the fun.
Planning a family gathering? The picnic shelter with its multiple tables provides a perfect spot to share a meal outdoors. The shelter is regularly maintained by park staff.
Active visitors will appreciate the basketball court and the spacious open field that's fantastic for frisbee, catch, or simply lounging on a blanket with a good book. These versatile spaces are good for families seeking outdoor recreation.
Natural Beauty
The park's thoughtful landscaping features young trees and shrubs specifically chosen to support local wildlife. Take a stroll and you might spot sugar maples, black gums, bur oaks, redbuds, and flowering dogwoods around the grounds.
These plantings do not simply look pretty - they create homes for squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and various bird species. Dog owners will be happy to know their furry friends are welcome, with plenty of trash cans along the walking trail for convenient waste disposal.
Beyond the Basics
For the more adventurous visitor, the park offers rock climbing and bouldering opportunities. The wall includes several spots for top rope climbing and even features one bolted sport route. If you're interested in testing your climbing skills, check out mountain project websites for more detailed information.
Tom Jones Commons connects areas within Eden Park, bridging the Walnut Hills and Mt. Adams neighborhoods. It's also near the Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Playhouse in the Park.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM. While there aren't permanent restrooms within the commons itself, portable toilets are available on-site, and proper restroom facilities can be found up the hill near Mirror Lake.
