About the Location

A Woodland Retreat in the City

Tucked away beside the University of Cincinnati campus lies Burnet Woods, a 90-acre green space that's been part of Cincinnati since 1874. As one of the oldest parks in the Cincinnati Parks system, these woods have stories to tell and paths to explore.

What we find notable about Burnet Woods is how it feels removed from urban life despite being right in the middle of it. Even on beautiful days, you'll find plenty of quiet corners to yourself - a rare gift in a city park.

Trails and Natural Escapes

The network of hiking trails weaving through the wooded areas provides a nice opportunity to disconnect for a while. Whether you prefer the well-maintained paved paths for an easy stroll or the natural trails that give you a more immersive forest experience, there's a route for every mood and energy level.

At the heart of the park sits a fishing lake that dates back to 1875. It's regularly stocked with channel catfish and largemouth bass, making it a go-to spot for local anglers. The resident ducks and geese are often seen around the lake, becoming frequent photography subjects for visitors.

For something more active, the disc golf course attracts players throughout the day. The course cleverly winds through different parts of the park, giving players a tour of the grounds while they work on their technique.

Historic Landmarks

Burnet Woods preserves pieces of Cincinnati's past through structures like the charming bandstand and gazebo from the early 1900s. These aren't just pretty architectural features - they've hosted countless community concerts, festivals, and gatherings over the decades.

The Trailside Nature Center, built in 1939, houses a planetarium and functions as a hub for nature education and community programs. Nearby, you can find a unique stone slide that continues to delight children just as it has for generations.

A Haven for Wildlife

The Audubon Society doesn't give out "Important Bird Area" designations lightly, but Burnet Woods earned its place in this international conservation system. The diverse habitats here support an impressive variety of bird species, making it worth bringing binoculars if you're even remotely interested in birdwatching.

The carefully maintained wildflower areas add splashes of color throughout the seasons. The park's ongoing conservation efforts help preserve these ecological treasures and maintain the natural diversity that makes Burnet Woods special.

Plan Your Visit

The park comes well-equipped for a day outdoors with a playground that keeps the younger visitors entertained. You'll find picnic areas with tables scattered throughout, and if you're planning something more substantial, head to the grilling areas at the top of the hill - they're ideal for family gatherings or weekend cookouts.

Burnet Woods welcomes visitors from 6AM until 10PM daily. There's free parking within the park, however spaces can fill up quickly on nice days. Restrooms are available, however they occasionally close for maintenance, so plan accordingly.

You'll often spot university students here seeking a peaceful place to study or simply escape campus for a while. But whether you're a student, a family with energetic kids, or someone just needing a moment with nature, Burnet Woods offers that rare thing in city life - a place where you can hear yourself think, surrounded by trees that have been standing watch over Cincinnati for generations.
