About Washington Park
Historic Roots
Situated in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, Washington Park represents a successful urban renewal project. The land has a layered past - it served as Presbyterian and Episcopal cemeteries before the city acquired the grounds between 1858 and 1863, converting them into the green space that exists today. In 1888, the park took on a very different role, hosting the Centennial Exposition of the Ohio Valley and Central States, a large-scale event marking the centennial of Ohio's progress and the settlement of the Northwest Territory.
Location and Layout
Spread across 8 acres, Washington Park sits right across from the majestic Cincinnati Music Hall with 12th, Race, and Elm Streets creating its borders. The park balances open lawns with landscaped areas that change with the seasons.

Transformation Story
In 2012, Washington Park underwent a $48 million renovation and expansion, a joint effort between the Cincinnati Park Board and the nonprofit 3CDC that grew the park from its original 6 acres to its current 8. The project also added an underground parking garage with capacity for up to 450 cars. When the renovated park reopened on July 6, 2012, the celebration had an international flavor - the inaugural concert was performed by the Mukunoki Chorus of Gifu, Japan, who were in Cincinnati for the World Choir Games.
This renovation did more than improve the park - it contributed to broader changes throughout Over-the-Rhine. The revitalized space has helped bring more visitors to the neighborhood.
Activities and Events
With over 400 events each year, there's rarely a quiet day at Washington Park. From live concerts and bustling markets to morning yoga and kids' activities, the calendar stays packed with options.

The great lawn gives you plenty of space to throw down a blanket for picnicking or catch outdoor performances, while tree-lined paths offer shady respites for leisurely strolls. You can catch everything from jazz nights to reggae Wednesdays, outdoor movies, and even FC Cincinnati pre-game rallies if you time your visit right.
Family-Friendly Features
The park offers several features for children. The park's playground features a castle-like structure with slides and climbing areas that blend seamlessly into the landscape. Right beside it, the splash pad becomes the summer hotspot where children can cool off under playful water fountains.
The playground area is fenced for safety, and there are restrooms nearby.
The Porch and Refreshments
The Porch offers a laid-back spot to grab a drink, including beer and wine, from its walk-up bar. With its casual picnic table seating, it's an excellent place to unwind after exploring the park.
Hungry? Food trucks regularly line the park's edges, offering everything from tacos to ice cream. You can enjoy a drink while listening to live music with the Cincinnati skyline as a backdrop.
Dog-Friendly Area
For dog owners, the dedicated dog park gives your four-legged friends a chance to run free and make new pals. There's also a water feature where dogs can cool off during hot summer days.
The rest of the park welcomes leashed dogs, so you don't have to leave your furry companion at home when you visit.
Historical Elements
Amid all the modern amenities, Washington Park hasn't forgotten its roots. A traditional bandstand sits alongside mature trees that shade much of the grounds, evoking the park's long history as a public gathering and performance venue. Nearby, a collection of Civil War-era memorials adds another layer of history to the space.
The memorials center on busts of Frederick Hecker and Colonel Robert Latimer McCook, both commanders connected to the German 9th Ohio Infantry - a regiment known informally as "Die Neuner." Historic cannons are also scattered across the grounds, and a bronze tablet installed in 1931 by the Sons and Daughters of the 9th O.V.I. rounds out the commemoration, creating an interesting juxtaposition against the park's contemporary features.
Practical Information
You can enjoy the park daily from 6 AM to 11 PM. If you're driving, the underground parking garage makes things easy with elevators that bring you directly up to park level.
Taking public transit? The Cincinnati Streetcar stops right at the park, connecting you to other downtown attractions. And yes, there are clean restrooms available throughout operating hours - sometimes it's the little things that matter most.
Community Impact
Washington Park accommodates many different users - from morning joggers and afternoon lunchers to evening concert-goers and weekend families. It's a welcoming green space where Cincinnati residents from all walks of life can spend time outdoors.
