About the Location
Urban Oasis
Found in Cincinnati's South Fairmount neighborhood, the Lick Run Greenway stretches for a mile as a refreshing strip of green amid the urban landscape. Completed in 2021, this $103 million project isn't just a pretty face - it pulls double duty as both a lovely public park and a clever solution to the city's stormwater challenges.
Ecological Engineering
At the heart of the greenway flows a human-crafted stream running the entire length of the park. It's actually a modern resurrection of the natural Lick Run waterway that was buried underground more than a century ago. This isn't just aesthetic - the stream helps separate rainwater from Cincinnati's combined sewer system, reducing overflow problems during heavy rain.
Water journeys through a thoughtfully designed series of wetlands, bioswales, and a large pond before eventually finding its way to Mill Creek. There's something calming about sitting near the flowing water, where you might spot ducks and turtles that have made this recreated habitat their home.
Recreational Amenities
Beyond its environmental benefits, Lick Run offers open space for locals. Walking paths meander alongside the stream, excellent for a morning jog, a leisurely stroll, or a bike ride with a water view.
Charming bridges span the waterway, connecting different sections of the park. If you're feeling more active, you can shoot hoops at the two basketball courts, let the kids burn energy at the playground (which caters to children of all ages), or cool off at the splash pad during Cincinnati's warmer months.
Natural Beauty
The greenway is thoughtfully planted with native species, creating little pockets of habitat for local wildlife while adding a genuine touch of nature to the urban setting. As you walk, you'll notice educational signage that tells the story of the park's ecological features and the history of the Lick Run watershed.
The distinctive rock formations and careful landscaping around the stream aren't just randomly placed - they enhance the natural feel of the park while serving practical purposes in the water management system.
Community Spaces
Need a spot for lunch or a small gathering? The greenway includes a covered picnic area with benches where you can relax in the shade. One particularly nice feature is how flat the terrain is - unusual for Cincinnati parks - making it an ideal spot for children learning to ride bikes or scooters.
You'll come across water fountains throughout, and during good weather, portable restrooms are typically available for visitors.
Community Impact
Lick Run Greenway combines environmental infrastructure with neighborhood enhancement. The project involved substantial engineering work, including three tunnels and specialized structures that connect the system to Mill Creek - highlighting how urban design often includes important elements that aren't immediately visible.
