About Cumberland Park in Cleveland
Cumberland Park is a public recreational area located in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The park spans approximately 18.5 acres and has been a fixture of the community since its establishment in the 1920s.
Originally part of the city's first major park development project, Cumberland Park was designed by renowned landscape architect A.D. Taylor. Construction on the park began in July 1926 and was largely completed by March 1927. The centerpiece of the park, Cumberland Pool, opened to residents on August 1, 1927, in a celebration deemed "the biggest municipal event of 1927" by local press.
The park features an all-purpose pathway that loops around the pool, playground, Veterans Memorial, and open field, spanning approximately 0.65 miles. This pathway extends past the Community Center and down to Forest Hill Park, as well as past the Historical Building and over to Cain Park, connecting various recreational areas in Cleveland Heights.
Cumberland Park has played a significant role in the community's history. During winters in the past, the city would flood the Cumberland parking lot to create an ice rink for residents to enjoy. The park has also been home to various community events and gatherings over the years.
Today, Cumberland Park continues to be a popular destination for Cleveland Heights residents, offering a mix of recreational facilities and open green spaces for various activities and relaxation.
