About The Mall

A Touch of Urban History

Tucked in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, The Mall (also known as Strawbridge Plaza or Mall C) is not only a park but also a living piece of city history. Dedicated in 2003, this green space sits within the larger Cleveland Mall, a public space that emerged from the City Beautiful movement of the early 20th century. Back then, city planners had a vision to create a grand civic area where government buildings and cultural institutions could shine amid natural beauty.

The Mall's origins trace back to the 1903 Group Plan, one of the most ambitious urban design proposals of its era. The plan was drawn up by a trio of prominent architects - Daniel Burnham, John Carrère, and Arnold Brunner - who envisioned a sweeping public space flanked by major civic and governmental buildings rendered in the neoclassical style. That vision shaped the Mall's character in ways that are still legible today.

What You'll Find

The Cleveland Mall is divided into three distinct sections running north to south. Mall A, the southernmost section, is officially named Veterans' Memorial Plaza and sits between Rockwell and St. Clair Avenues. Mall B occupies the middle stretch, positioned 27 feet above sidewalk level over the entrance to the Cleveland Convention Center along Lakeside Avenue. Mall C, the northernmost section, is the section dedicated as Strawbridge Plaza in 2003.

Spread across roughly 26 acres in total, the Mall combines open areas with practical features. You'll find sprawling grassy areas ideal for lounging, well-kept walkways for your downtown stroll, and public art that adds character to the space. The open field space across from the convention center transforms into an active venue when the city comes alive with events - a breathing space where the paths offer a moment of calm amid the downtown environment.

The Mall is home to some notable public art as well. On Mall A, one of the complex's most recognized landmarks is the Fountain of Eternal Life, sculpted by Marshall Fredericks. Also known as the War Memorial Fountain, the work features a striking human figure rising above the fountain basin as a tribute to those who served in wartime. Mall B, meanwhile, features City of Light, an illuminated steel sculpture by Stephen Manka that uses programmable color-washed light to evoke the flames of the classic games.

What Happens Here

During the year, The Mall becomes home to a colorful calendar of events - festivals pop up, impromptu gatherings take shape, and cultural celebrations like Pride Day bring energy and community spirit. If you're an aviation enthusiast, this spot has earned its reputation as a prime viewing area for the annual Cleveland Air Show, where you can catch spectacular aerial displays without purchasing tickets to the main venue.

History in the Making

Every step you take here has historical significance - the entire Cleveland Mall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The space embodies an approach to urban planning that values open spaces and accessibility, a refreshing philosophy that still resonates today.

Elements of Beaux-Arts architecture blend with the natural space, creating an environment for both relaxation and cultural activities. Beneath your feet lies the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, which replaced the original 1964 structure and connects underground to Public Auditorium and the Global Center for Health Innovation.

The Views

Perhaps the most captivating aspect of The Mall is what you can see from it. As evening falls, the lights from the stadium and Lake Erie create a gentle glow that transforms the cityscape. The park's elevated position offers a great perch for taking in downtown Cleveland - a peaceful spot to pause and appreciate the urban panorama unfurling before you.

More Than a Park

With public art and recreational areas, The Mall is a significant part of downtown Cleveland. It's popular with locals on lunch breaks and tourists exploring the city. Its downtown location makes it easily accessible, but you should note that during major events, public transportation might be your best bet to avoid parking headaches.
