About the Location

Riverside Oasis

Nestled along the eastern bank of the Scioto River, Battelle Riverfront Park is a breath of fresh air in the heart of Columbus. With the city skyline creating a stunning backdrop against the flowing river, this little urban retreat offers a great escape from the daily grind. The paved pathways weave throughout the park, inviting you to walk, jog, or cycle your stress away.

Established back in 1983, this 4.1-acre (1.7 ha) downtown retreat sits just a stone's throw from Columbus City Hall. Named after Gordon Battelle and funded by the Battelle Memorial Institute, the park has lawns that are well-maintained - good for sprawling out with a good book or simply watching the clouds drift by.

Monuments with Meaning

The park features an interesting collection of monuments and memorials. The Columbus Firefighters Memorial stands proudly with its eternal flame, honoring since 1958 those brave souls who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Art lovers will appreciate the "Freedom" sculpture, gifted to Columbus by renowned artist Alfred Tibor in 1985. History buffs can explore several other notable monuments including the Spanish-American War Memorial, the poignant "Their Spirits Circle the Earth" tribute to the Challenger astronauts, the touching "To Honor the Immigrants" sculpture, the James W. Barney Pickaweekee Story Grove, and the solemn Workers Memorial. Each one tells a story, offering quiet moments of reflection amid the greenery.

Fresh Upgrades and Features

The park got a major facelift in 2015 as part of the broader Scioto Greenways project. These renovations expanded the multi-purpose trails and added river access for canoes and kayaks - a welcome addition for water enthusiasts looking to paddle the Scioto.

The park hosts various events year-round from cultural festivals to ceremonies. Its central downtown location makes it easily accessible whether you're a local or just passing through town, offering a peaceful break from the city surroundings.

Recreation Your Way

As part of the Scioto Mile network of parks and trails, Battelle Riverfront Park connects you to even more outdoor adventures. The wide concrete boardwalk is great for cycling (with rentals available nearby if you didn't bring your own), while the river is suitable for kayaking during the warmer months.

The open green spaces are ideal for picnics - you can bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy the riverside setting. In the evening, the surrounding area lights up, making for a pleasant post-dinner stroll.

A Park for All Seasons

Each season brings its own charm to this riverside retreat. Spring and summer fill the park with lush greenery and people enjoying the sunshine. Fall transforms it with a canvas of red and gold leaves against the Columbus skyline. Even winter has its quiet beauty, when the monuments stand in stark relief against the bare landscape and the river flows on.

Dog owners, bring your four-legged friends (just keep them leashed). And if you're into wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for various birds and, if you're lucky, you might spot beavers going about their business in the river - a little touch of nature right in the middle of the city.
