About the Location
River Views & Urban Vibes
Next to the western bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus, Genoa Park offers a breath of fresh air amidst the city bustle. This 2.07-acre green space sits between Broad Street and Rich Street, forming a lovely piece of the Scioto Mile park system.
The park draws its name from Genoa, Italy - one of Columbus' sister cities and the birthplace of Christopher Columbus himself (yes, our city's namesake). The riverside setting offers genuinely stunning views of both the Scioto River and Columbus skyline. It's particularly beautiful at sunset when golden light bathes everything, or after dark when city lights reflect across the water.
What Makes It Special
At the heart of Genoa Park sits an amphitheater with an absolutely gorgeous view of downtown Columbus. This amphitheater features LED lighting built into the steps and seating areas, creating multi-colored displays throughout the year. When there's a concert or event happening here, the atmosphere is quite special.
The park is also home to the Columbus Police Memorial, a solemn and respectful tribute to officers who've made the ultimate sacrifice serving our community.
For those just looking to relax, several swings scattered across the park let you gently sway while taking in the riverside ambiance. It's one of those simple pleasures that makes this place special.
Art in the Park
History buffs will appreciate the statue of Lucas Sullivant, who founded Franklinton, Columbus' oldest neighborhood. Local artist Michael Foley created this monument in 2000, commissioned by the Franklinton Historical Society.
Our personal favorites are the Scioto Lounge Deer Sculptures - quirky bronze figures of "humanized" deer that seem to be just hanging out in the park. There's something wonderfully whimsical about them. These were created by Terry Allen (who's also a country music singer, interestingly enough). The concept ties back to the Shawnee Indian word "Scioto," meaning "hairy water" - a reference to a local legend about deer hair found floating in the river.
Things to Do
Genoa Park really comes alive during its many events during the year. The Arts Festival, Jazz and Rib Fest, Latino Festival, Taco Fest, and Juneteenth Festival transform the space into a vibrant community gathering with food, music, and cultural experiences.
On quieter days, the open grassy areas make for perfect picnic spots, but you'll need to bring your own blanket as there aren't designated picnic tables. The shade trees provide welcome relief on hot summer days. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends - the park is dog-friendly with walking trails and waste stations available.
Getting There & Around
One of the cool things about Genoa Park is its location next to the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). You can easily make a day of visiting both. The park also connects to the Scioto Riverwalk, giving you options for extended strolls or runs along the water.
Fair warning about parking - it can be a bit limited, especially during events. You'll come across several garages and street parking nearby, but you might need to pay, particularly when something special is happening at the park.
Whether you want to catch an outdoor concert, have a peaceful riverside picnic, or just need a quiet moment amid the downtown energy, Genoa Park provides a little green oasis in the heart of Columbus.
