About Genoa Park in Columbus

Genoa Park is a 2.07-acre urban park located along the western bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Situated between Broad Street and Rich Street, the park is part of the larger Scioto Mile park system. Genoa Park is named after Genoa, Italy, one of Columbus' sister cities and the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, after whom the city is named.

The park features an amphitheater with a stunning view of the downtown Columbus skyline, making it a popular venue for concerts and events. The amphitheater is equipped with dynamic LED lighting installed within its steps and seating area, programmed to display multi-colored designs throughout the year.

Genoa Park is home to several notable features, including the Columbus Police Memorial, which bears the names of Columbus Police Officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the public. The park also houses a statue of Lucas Sullivant, the founder of Franklinton, Columbus' oldest neighborhood. This statue, erected in 2000, was commissioned by the Franklinton Historical Society and created by local artist Michael Foley.

Another artistic highlight of the park is the Scioto Lounge Deer Sculptures. These whimsical bronze sculptures of "humanized" deer were created by country music singer and visual artist Terry Allen. The concept was inspired by the Shawnee Indian word "Scioto," meaning "hairy water," which refers to a local legend about deer hair found floating in the river.

The park's location adjacent to the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) adds to its appeal as a recreational and educational destination. Genoa Park's green spaces, walking paths, and riverside location make it a popular spot for both locals and visitors to relax, exercise, and enjoy outdoor activities in the heart of Columbus.
