About the Location
A Slice of Nature in Columbus
Nestled in Columbus's Mid East community, Helsel Park spans a generous 41.12 acres off S Hamilton Road. Soon to be a trailhead for the Big Walnut Trail, this peaceful spot offers something special with its access to Big Walnut Creek, where you might catch glimpses of canoeists gliding along the water on a good day.
Natural Wonders
The park's natural setting has a peaceful quality to it. Tall trees create pockets of shade while providing homes for the diverse bird population that fills the air with song throughout the day. On summer evenings, fireflies appear among the trees, their gentle blinking creating a lovely natural display.
The park's connection to Big Walnut Creek isn't just pretty - it's a window into local wildlife and offers opportunities for water recreation. The wooded paths offer a break from city life, which many nature enthusiasts appreciate.
Space to Play
Well-maintained grassy fields stretch across the park, offering plenty of room to spread out and play. The soccer fields are particularly popular, becoming hubs of activity during youth team practices and weekend games when cheering parents line the sidelines.
The paved paths wind through the grounds, ideal for a morning jog, afternoon walk, or casual bike ride. Many locals bring their four-legged friends here for exercise - just remember to keep them leashed and clean up afterward!
Basic Comforts
Helsel Park keeps things simple with its amenities. You can find a parking lot for easy access and scattered benches when you need a moment to rest. Portable toilets are available (especially handy during those busy soccer tournaments).
While there aren't elaborate picnic facilities, the expansive grassy areas make it easy to throw down a blanket and enjoy an impromptu picnic under the open sky.
Fresh Changes Coming Soon
Exciting changes are on the horizon! Starting in spring 2024, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department will begin redeveloping Helsel Park. The ambitious master plan covers nearly 60 acres and aims to make the park safer while expanding programs and increasing the tree canopy in the Eastland area.
Look forward to new play spaces for both families and pets, expanded natural areas for exploration and learning, and the development of an alternative transportation hub. The current athletic fields will find a new home in another nearby park.
One important note: Helsel Park sits in a floodway, which will shape how these new plans take form in the conceptual design. This natural feature presents both challenges and opportunities for the park's future layout.
