About the Location
History and Development
John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons is a 6-acre urban park nestled in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio. It sits on what was once the Columbus City Center mall, which was demolished in 2009 to make way for this refreshing public space.
Since opening in May 2011, the Commons hosts over 200 events annually - everything from concerts and cultural festivals to family activities and seasonal celebrations that bring the city together.
Park Features
Stroll through the Commons and you'll find generous green lawns excellent for sprawling out with a book, tossing a frisbee, or enjoying an impromptu picnic. Beautiful gardens frame the perimeter, adding a touch of natural serenity to the urban landscape.
At the north end stands a performance stage for concerts, festivals, and community gatherings that are often free to attend. From summer concerts under the stars to family movie nights with the skyline as your backdrop, there's always something happening here.
Dotted across the park are charming bistro-style seating areas near food vendors, creating perfect spots to savor a bite while watching the downtown world go by.
Attractions and Activities
The park features a hand-carved carousel at its center - a charming attraction popular with visitors of all ages. During special events, you can often hop on for a free ride, making it an accessible delight for families.
During the year, the Commons offers a variety of programming to keep you active and engaged. Join a free yoga class on the lawn, participate in a spirited kickball league, or bring the little ones for family fun days packed with activities. When hunger strikes in the summer months, food trucks roll in with diverse options to satisfy any craving.
In winter, the Commons features Christmas light displays that brighten up evening visits. Colorful illuminations, tunnels of light, and festive decorations attract visitors from across Ohio.

Amenities
No need to plan your visit around bathroom breaks - restroom facilities are conveniently located near the carousel, with additional portable options appearing during larger events.
Your four-legged friends are welcome too! The Commons is dog-friendly, with waste bags and disposal bins thoughtfully placed throughout. Just remember to keep your pup leashed as you explore together.
And if you're in the mood for something sweet, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams has a permanent spot in the park. Grab a scoop (or two) and find your perfect patch of grass to enjoy it on.
Sustainability and Design
Beyond being beautiful, Columbus Commons was designed with the environment in mind. Eco-friendly elements like a rain garden and an efficient irrigation system help minimize the park's environmental footprint.
The thoughtful design blends greenery with urban elements, creating a refreshing oasis amid the city's concrete and glass landscape.
Management and Impact
Downtown Columbus, Inc. keeps everything running smoothly, from planning events to day-to-day operations. It's worth noting that funding for maintenance and all those free programs comes mainly from revenue generated by the adjacent parking garages - not from your tax dollars.
John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons has contributed to downtown Columbus's renewal, providing an outdoor space that residents and visitors can enjoy throughout the year.
