About the Location

History and Origins

Set in Kettering, a cozy suburb of Dayton, Ohio, you'll find Delco Park sprawling across 120 acres of public greenspace. The park's story begins back in 1953 when it first took shape as the Delco Sportsman's Club, created by none other than Charles F. Kettering - the brilliant mind behind Delco Electronics and quite the inventor and industrialist of his time.

When General Motors decided to pack up and leave the Dayton area in the early 1990s, Virginia Kettering stepped in and advocated for the land to be donated to the City of Kettering. The space was renamed Delco Park and opened its gates to everyone, quickly becoming a favorite spot for locals and visitors to unwind and play.

Recreational Facilities

Delco Park isn't just a pretty face - it's packed with things to do. There's a sizable lake with a fishing pier where you can try your luck at catch-and-release fishing (though the fish don't always feel like cooperating, according to some anglers).

Sports enthusiasts will find multiple sports fields for soccer, baseball, and softball that are well-kept and spacious. If volleyball's more your speed, there are sand volleyball courts available, while cycling fans can enjoy the BMX track.

Walking and Exercise Opportunities

Looking to get your steps in? The park features an extensive network of paved walking paths that loop around the lake, offering some pretty scenic views along the way. The paths are wheelchair accessible too, making them inclusive for everyone to enjoy.

And if you're feeling extra motivated, you'll find outdoor exercise stations dotted along the walking routes. These little fitness pit stops are ideal for mixing up your routine with some strength training while soaking in the fresh air.

Amenities and Attractions

For those days when you just want to kick back, Delco Park offers picnic areas with shelters that you can reserve for family get-togethers or celebrations. There are three covered pavilions that are particularly handy for larger gatherings when you need some shade or shelter.

Kids will love the well-maintained playground where they can burn off energy in a safe environment. And when nature calls, clean public restrooms are conveniently located in the center of the park - a small detail that makes a big difference during a day out.

The park is also home to the Kettering Veteran's Memorial, a thoughtful tribute to those who have served in the military. History buffs might enjoy the Charles F. Kettering History Walk, a self-guided tour that highlights the legacy of Charles F. Kettering and his innovative contributions.

Natural Setting and Wildlife

What really makes Delco Park special is its blend of open meadows and wooded areas that create a peaceful backdrop for whatever brings you to the park. The central pond attracts ducks, geese, and other wildlife, offering some impromptu nature watching opportunities.

Dog owners, rejoice - the park is dog-friendly, so your leashed four-legged friends can join you for walks around the lake. Just remember to bring those poop bags to help keep the grounds clean for everyone.

Community Events

Delco Park really shines as a community hub, hosting various events all year long that bring people together. The 4th of July fireworks display is particularly impressive, drawing crowds from all around the area who come to watch the sky light up in celebration.

The park's calendar includes fishing derbies for kids, community festivals, and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.
