About the Location
Natural Features
Nestled within Dayton's city limits, Eastwood MetroPark spreads across 437 acres of refreshing green space. At its heart lies a 185-acre lake, a remnant of the American Aggregate Corporation's gravel quarrying days. The park also features Blue Lake, known for its clear waters.
The Mad River flows through the park, making this spot a natural hub for water enthusiasts. As you explore, you'll discover a surprising mix of landscapes - from open grassland prairies to shaded forested areas - creating a nature retreat that feels removed from city life, despite being within Dayton's borders.
Trails and Recreation
Eastwood sits at a sweet spot where several regional trails converge, giving you plenty of options to hike, bike, or simply wander. Both the Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail pass through the park for those looking to connect to longer adventures.
For a more casual experience, the Prairie Meadow Trail Loop lets you get up close with the park's diverse ecosystems. If you're after an easy-going walk, the park's 3-mile loop trail runs mostly on level ground, fantastic for visitors of all fitness levels. The paved paths accommodate strollers, and the predominantly flat terrain is suitable for casual walks or jogs.
Water Activities
Water lovers have plenty of options here. The Mad River Water Trail and the Mad River Run stretch for 4.0 miles, offering great spots for kayaking and other water sports. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at Eastwood Lake, Blue Lake, or along the Mad River, with Eastwood Lake being particularly good for bass, catfish, and crappie.
Don't have your own kayak? No problem - you can rent one right in the park. The lake follows a thoughtful alternating schedule: motorized watercraft like boats and jet skis are welcome on even-numbered days, while odd-numbered days are reserved for peaceful, non-motorized activities such as kayaking and paddle boarding.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
Throughout Eastwood, you'll come across numerous picnic spots, many featuring concrete tables with lovely water views. Planning a family reunion or birthday celebration? Several shelters are available to reserve. Many picnic areas come equipped with grills for a proper cookout, and there's plenty of parking around the park to make your visit hassle-free.
Wildlife Viewing
The diverse habitats throughout Eastwood attract an impressive variety of wildlife, especially birds. The lake draws numerous waterbirds, making this a fantastic spot for birdwatching or nature photography. Keep your eyes open for ducks, geese, and if you're lucky, deer wandering near the trails. The mix of ecosystems supports different wildlife throughout the changing seasons.
Environmental Significance
Beyond recreation, Eastwood plays an important role along the Mad River for flood control and helps preserve Dayton's water supply. This quiet natural haven offers a meaningful escape from urban life, giving both locals and visitors a place to play, observe nature, and learn about the outdoors - all without leaving the city.
