Island MetroPark

Historic Origins

Island MetroPark is a 33-acre urban park located in downtown Dayton, Ohio, at the confluence of the Great Miami and Stillwater Rivers. The park has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century when it was known as the White City Amusement Park. Today, it serves as a green oasis in the heart of the city, offering a variety of recreational opportunities and natural beauty.

Natural Features

The park features picturesque landscapes with mature tree growth, including sycamore, maple, and willow trees. These trees provide ample shade and contribute to the park's lush atmosphere.

The rivers bordering both sides of the park offer scenic views and opportunities for water-based activities.

Notable Structures

Island MetroPark is home to several notable structures. The Leslie L. Diehl Bandshell, an Art Deco structure built in 1940 as a Works Progress Administration project, stands as a centerpiece of the park. This bandshell has been the site of numerous concerts and community events over the years.

The Gayle B. Price Jr. Bridge is another landmark within the park, offering visitors a vantage point to enjoy views of downtown Dayton and the surrounding waterways.

Recreation Opportunities

The park serves as a hub for outdoor recreation and community gatherings. It provides access to the Great Miami River Trail, part of the larger Miami Valley bike trail network.

The Buckeye Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail also pass through the park, connecting it to long-distance hiking routes.
