About the Location
History
Before it became the park we know today, this spot was once home to Willow Beach, an amusement park that entertained locals from 1929 until 1949. In 1954, the City of Toledo scooped up the 13-15 acre property for $50,000 and renamed it after Edward D. Cullen, a former city councilman who clearly made quite an impression on the community.
Location and Features
Set in Toledo's Point Place neighborhood, Cullen Park sits right on the shores of Maumee Bay, connecting to the vast waters of Lake Erie. The park features a distinctive man-made peninsula that stretches over half a mile into the bay, with excellent water views.
Across the grounds, you'll find several shaded picnic tables ideal for a family lunch, alongside benches strategically placed along the waterfront for those moments when you just want to sit and take in the scenery. There are also swings facing the water - ideal spots to unwind and watch the gentle waves roll in.
Recreation Activities
The park provides direct access to western Lake Erie through its free boat launch facilities with three lanes, which helps reduce weekend launch wait times. Kayakers haven't been forgotten either, with a separate dock for kayak launching and plenty of parking for vehicles with trailers.
Fishing is particularly popular here, especially during late fall and spring when Lesser Scaup and other diving ducks gather in the bay. You can cast your line from the docks or find your own special spot along the peninsula.
If you prefer staying on land, the paved walking trails and peninsula path are excellent for a stroll, walking your dog, or simply enjoying a bit of nature. Just a heads-up: while the peninsula trail rewards you with amazing views of Maumee Bay and the Point Place skyline, it can be a bit rugged in places.
Birding Opportunities
As an official stop on the Great Lake Erie Birding Trail, this park offers excellent bird-watching opportunities year-round. Spring brings Blackpoll Warblers, Dunlins, and Canvasbacks. Summer visitors include Warbling Vireos and Ospreys, while winter showcases Greater Scaups and Yellow-Rumped Warblers.
The heavily vegetated peninsula becomes a haven for songbirds during migration seasons, making it worth bringing your binoculars. While you're scanning the horizon, you might also catch sight of massive freighters and ships making their way through the Toledo port.
Recent Improvements
Good news for comfort-seekers - 2023 saw the installation of new flush restrooms at the front of the park. These modern facilities, connected to city water, are a welcome upgrade from the previous portable toilets, making your visit that much more comfortable whether you're here to boat, fish, or just enjoy the scenery.
Dog-Friendly Environment
You can absolutely bring your four-legged friend along to Cullen Park, as long as they stay leashed. The spacious parking area and various trails offer plenty of room for your pup to explore. Just note that some sections of the trail might have debris, so watch your step and your pet's paws as you wander through this waterfront haven.
