Glass City Metropark

Riverside Revival

Glass City Metropark is a 70-acre public park located along the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. Opened in 2020, it is part of the larger Glass City Riverwalk project aimed at revitalizing Toledo's riverfront. The park was developed on a former industrial site that has been transformed into a green space with various recreational amenities.

Natural Features

The park features a mix of natural areas and built attractions. It includes over 27 acres of upland prairie grasses, 17 acres of forest, and 3,200 feet of restored shoreline habitat. These areas serve as habitats for migratory birds, mammals, and insects, including monarch butterflies and eastern bumblebees.

Water Elements

Glass City Metropark incorporates several water features, including a kayak cove for launching and lessons, and the Mini-Maumee water play area that interprets the Maumee River watershed. The park also features a series of terraced natural stormwater basins that collect, detain, and treat stormwater runoff.

Recreational Amenities

A notable feature of the park is "The Ribbon," a 1,000-foot loop that serves as an ice skating trail in winter and a roller skating path in warmer months. Adjacent to The Ribbon is a 5,000-square-foot skating pond offering a more traditional rink experience.

Play Areas

The park includes several play areas designed to offer challenging and unique experiences. The Grosbeak Discovery Play area features a 41-foot tall adventure tower inspired by the blue grosbeak bird, complete with climbing nets, slides, and other play structures. There's also a Prairie and Pollinator Discovery Play area that incorporates natural materials and native plant species.

Facilities

Glass City Metropark houses Market Hall, a 9,500-square-foot building that includes a restaurant, event space, restrooms, and equipment rentals. The building design was inspired by a forest tree canopy and features large glass walls to provide views of the park and river.

Accessibility

The park is designed to be accessible and inclusive, with features like ADA-accessible kayak launches and play structures. It also incorporates public art that blends the area's industrial history with themes of unity, community, and sustainability.
