About the Location

Riverside Revival

Nestled along the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, Glass City Metropark spans 70 acres of what was once industrial land. Since opening in 2020, this green space has become part of the Glass City Riverwalk project, transforming Toledo's riverfront. This former industrial site has been transformed into a recreational space within Toledo's park system.

Natural Features

Take a stroll through the park and you'll find yourself immersed in nature's diversity. With over 27 acres of upland prairie grasses, 17 acres of forest, and 3,200 feet of restored shoreline habitat, the park provides habitat for wildlife in the heart of the city.

The natural areas have become something of a wildlife hotspot, hosting migratory birds, various mammals, and insects - including monarch butterflies and eastern bumblebees. The wildlife can be quite abundant here, with numerous butterflies and birds visible throughout the park. The park includes green roof features and native plant landscaping, with flowers like Lanceleaf Coreopsis and Leadplant blossoms adding color throughout.

Water Elements

Water plays a central role in the park's identity. If you're feeling adventurous, check out the kayak cove for launching your own vessel or taking lessons. For families with little ones, the Mini-Maumee water play area is a must-visit spot where kids can learn about the Maumee River watershed while splashing around. This popular splash pad features waterfalls, geysers, and shallow areas safe for toddlers.

The park also incorporates clever environmental design with terraced natural stormwater basins that collect and treat runoff. From the river's edge, you can see the Toledo skyline - the views are especially nice at sunset.

Recreational Amenities

The park features "The Ribbon," a 1,000-foot loop used for ice skating in winter and roller skating in warmer months. Right next to it sits a 5,000-square-foot skating pond for those who prefer a more traditional rink experience. Don't worry if you didn't bring your own gear; both ice and roller skates are available to rent on-site.

For a more relaxed experience, you can reserve one of the private cabanas with seating and fire pits. Some cabanas offer food and drink service from the park's restaurant.

Play Areas

The play spaces offer more than standard playground equipment. The Grosbeak Discovery Play area features an impressive 41-foot tall adventure tower inspired by the blue grosbeak bird. With climbing nets and slides, this structure allows both kids and adults to explore from different heights.

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the Prairie and Pollinator Discovery Play area, which cleverly incorporates natural materials and native plants. There's also a third playground designed with younger children in mind, featuring more accessible equipment. If that's not enough, you can zoom across the zipline or try out the unique seesaws that offer a fresh spin on a playground classic.

Just a heads-up: the metal slides can get quite hot in direct sunlight, so you might want to check them with your hand first on sunny days. While there are places for parents to sit, some additional shade would be welcome during the summer months.

Facilities

At the heart of the park stands Market Hall, a 9,500-square-foot building housing The Garden restaurant, event space, restrooms, and equipment rentals. The building's design, inspired by a forest tree canopy, features large glass walls that showcase beautiful views of the park and river.

You'll discover numerous picnic areas around the grounds, including pavilions with tables and some spots equipped with charcoal grills. The Glass City Pavilion has become a sought-after venue for weddings and events, offering modern amenities with natural lighting and picturesque downtown views.

Clean restrooms are available in several locations, including family bathrooms and baby changing facilities - a thoughtful touch for visitors with young children.

Accessibility

The park was designed with everyone in mind, featuring ADA-accessible kayak launches and inclusive play structures. Around the grounds, you'll notice public art that thoughtfully blends the area's industrial history with themes of unity, community, and sustainability.

Open daily from 7AM to 10PM, the park offers plenty of flexibility to visit when it best suits your schedule. Just keep in mind that parking can fill up quickly during peak times, especially on beautiful weekend days, so arriving early is your best bet if you want a spot close to the action.
